“House Of The Dragon” Season 2 is finally filming, but it’s still a long way off

Just days after the highly successful series launch of “House Of The Dragon,” it was clear that the first of many planned “Game Of Thrones” spin-offs would get a second season. Nevertheless, almost nine months had to pass since this announcement before the cameras could actually be activated again for the next season. After all, the preparation of such an extensive fantasy series with such a large cast is extremely time-consuming.

But now it’s finally here: As US broadcaster HBO and German “House Of The Dragon” home Sky announced in corresponding press releases, production of Season 2 has now begun.

Great battles…

In an official statement, showrunner Ryan Condal has already promised that we will also be in the next chapter of “Game Of Thrones” prehistory get ready for big battles and lots of dragon action “All your favorite characters will soon be conspiring at the council tables, marching their armies and drawing their dragons into battle. We can’t wait to show you what we have in store.”

Season 2 of House Of The Dragon, also based on Game Of Thrones creator George RR Martin’s book Fire and Blood, continues the increasingly brutal battle for the Iron Throne of Westeros, and will soon herald the fall of House Targaryen . Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D’Arcy) and her husband Daemon (Matt Smith) are on one side, Alicent Hightower (Olivia Cooke) with their sons on the other.

… long wait

Just because the cameras are now firing in England and Spain doesn’t mean we’ll be seeing the new season of House Of The Dragon anytime soon. Even though season 2 will contain “only” eight episodes instead of ten this time (among other things because an important battle originally planned for season 2 is now likely to be moved to season 3 for dramaturgical reasons), the production (and especially the post-production with the many visual effects) are no less complex than in season 1.

At that time there were about 16 months between the start of the shooting and the start of the season, but here too the corona situation slowed down the work a bit. Nevertheless, season 2 should be available in late spring at the earliest, more likely not until the summer of 2024 – and thus almost exactly two years after the opening season which started in August 2021. In this country, Sky and its streaming service WOW will be ready again in parallel with the US launch.
