There is no more loyal soul than a dog. In order for humans and animals to live comfortably together, it is important that the dog’s needs match their lifestyle. Florine Ermatinger, 28, dog trainer and co-founder of the Ohana dog school, advises prospective dog owners to think carefully about what character traits they want in a dog before buying one.
For her and her colleague Xenia Baumann (25), who co-founded the dog school and also works as a dog trainer there, it is very important that the animals do not go to the shelter with the wrong decision later on. “We recommend every new dog come in contact with an expert on dog selection and cohabitation,” says Ermatinger of Blick.ch.
Important questions before buying
According to two experts, it’s best to get a complete picture of your dream dog beforehand and think carefully about what you want from living with this animal. Before getting an animal companion, you should ask yourself these questions and answer them honestly:
- How much time do I want to spend training the dog?
- How much time do I have to keep the animal busy every day?
- What activities do I want to do with my dog?
- Does it matter if the dog is human-friendly or kid-friendly?
- Should the dog be able to accompany me everywhere in daily life?
working or family dog
After answering all the questions, you can determine what physical and character traits of the dog are necessary for harmonious coexistence. Ermatinger explains that some dog breeds have been bred for specific jobs over the years. Therefore, such breeds will be motivated to herd, hunt or guard, depending on what the pedigree specializes in over the generations. “These dogs are often very demanding and quickly develop behavioral problems without their special needs being met. It is only in the hands of those who are willing and able to take that responsibility,” the dog trainer states.
Baumann also advises against working dogs if you want a “comfortable family dog” that can get along with a cheaper lifestyle. Both trainers recommend breeds such as the Bolonka Zwetna or the Bernese Mountain Dog as family dogs. But many hybrid dogs would also do well.
What should be considered in puppies?
“With a puppy you have to make sure that the parents have a healthy and balanced character. They also need to be well socialized in their first home,” says Ermatinger. “Every litter can have brave, active, quiet, shy and very affectionate puppies. We advise future dog owners to visit the breeder several times and seek advice from them.»
But the nature of puppies is not immutable, the dog trainer continues. “The puppy’s experiences in his new home and the owner’s upbringing have a significant impact on his development.”
Adopt dogs from animal shelters
If the dog is older or older and has been adopted from an animal shelter, for example, you have to decide whether the dog fits your lifestyle based on the animal’s known characteristics, says Ermatinger. Refuge staff can provide information in this case. “If possible, we recommend getting the dog for trial purposes,” says the expert.
right upbringing
Theoretically, you can train any dog with good socialization and breed-appropriate handling. “In practice, however, it’s often more complex, and some dog owners are unable to optimally organize training due to a lack of time or knowledge,” says Ermatinger. This also causes problems.
The environment during training can also only be controlled to a limited extent, meaning that mishaps can always occur during training. Therefore, it is useful for beginners to consult an expert when choosing a suitable dog and regarding cohabitation.
