With “House Of The Dragon”, there is currently only one “Game Of Thrones” spin-off, but numerous others are in development. But many of them will never appear. That’s because of the way such series are created: because even though the intention is to tell more about the world of Westeros, no one can judge from the start what the best ideas are. Therefore, only rough ideas are thrown out at first, some of which then become concepts, some of which are further developed and maybe even get scenarios. After this lengthy process, in which many ideas may have fallen into the water, it is possible that only a pilot episode will be shot before an entire series season is actually made and broadcast.
So there are many steps along the way from the idea of doing a particular series to the finished series. And at any of these steps, a project can fail, because it is no longer convincing or because a more promising parallel developed idea is preferred. “Game Of Thrones” inventor George RR Martin made it clear early on that only a small fraction of the ideas in circulation will actually become a series. Several announced projects are already on hold, although Martin made it clear that this does not mean the end. After all, you can unfreeze them at some point and try again (although this is unlikely in most cases).
If a project is stopped at a very early stage, i.e. during development, writing process, etc., this is rarely officially communicated. That’s why you often don’t know exactly whether a project is really dead or whether there has simply been no progress for a long time. In the case of some of the “Game Of Thrones” projects, it can be assumed that they are no longer actively pursued at the moment. In our overview of current projects, we always make it clear to you what the latest status is.
