After the mega success of “Puss in Boots 2”, the franchise is alive again: “Shrek 5” and more to come!

Actually, DreamWorks Animation has made an agreement with “Minions” creator Chris Meledandri and his company Illumination Entertainment to promote a world wide reboot of “Shrek”. The first joint project was “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish” where Meledandri got the upper hand with the idea of not really doing a hard reboot but telling an independent story in a new look but also keeping elements like voice acting Antonio Banderas.

The result was pleasing. The worldwide box office of nearly $500 million is only half the story. Because there is also exuberant feedback from all sides. Not only families, but adult hardcore movie fans and Hollywood stars couldn’t stop getting excited about the fast paced adventure.

Like Meledandri now revealed, there won’t be a classic “Shrek” reboot either. He was determined to bring back the original stars. So will again Mike Mines, Cameron Diaz And Eddie Murphy are heard as Shrek, Fiona and Esel. When the reboot was first announced, he stated that it was his plan.

So the new movie will somehow become “Shrek 5” – although it certainly won’t stay with this title. We assume you can come up with a twist to tell a story so new that knowledge of the predecessors is unnecessary – So it was with “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish”. After all, the fourth and so far last “Shrek” movie “Shrek Forever After” came out in cinemas in 2010, 13 years ago. “Shrek 5” will be a fairly soft reboot.

Will there be a donkey spin-off?

Meledandri cannot make “Shrek 5” official because negotiations with the stars have not yet been completed. These have only just begun, but the three actors have already given signals that they want to be a part of it again. He is therefore positive – and in one case more could come out.

Eddie Murphy recently publicly stated that instead of “Puss in Boots” spin-offs, it would have been better to do additional movies starring his character Donkey. Meledandri now explained that he was excited about these comments. When asked if he thought Donkey could carry his own movie, he made it clear that he definitely did.

So it seems there’s a lot more than just “Shrek 5” coming out of the world around the green bogeyman. In any case, those responsible are working on the idea of a donkey adventure and a next “Puss in Boots” is actually very likely after the sensational success of “The Last Wish”.
