With “The Lord of the Rings”: The Return of the King” the saga of the One Ring came to an impressive end. Not only fans and the trade press were impressed by the end of the fantasy series, in the end there were even 11 Oscars for the film – only “Ben Hur” and “Titanic” succeeded before that. However, a scene was shot for the third part, which would have slightly diminished the overall epic impression.
This is a sequence that takes place in front of the Black Gate in Mordor. Here King Aragorn (Viggo Mortensen) and his companions take on the countless orcs. As we know, there is also the epic moment when Aragorn takes on an armored troll in single combat. In reality, however, a completely different opponent was planned for the forest ranger at the beginning.
Aragorn would face Sauron
This is actually where Aragorn would fight Sauron himself! A deleted scene shows Sauron appearing before his orc army. First of all, his radiant Elf form can be seen, which is finally encased in the black armor we know from the intro of “The Lord of the Rings – The Fellowship of the Ring”.
The fight between Aragorn and Sauron was even filmed! Aragorn plunges his sword into the evil ruler’s chest, leaving him unimpressed. In the end, Sauron can only be stopped because the ring eventually sinks into Mount Doom’s lava. You can watch all available scenes of the duel between Aragorn and Sauron in this YouTube video:
Because of this, the fight against Sauron was (fortunately) scrapped
Anyone who has watched the bonus material of The Lord of the Rings saga knows that Peter Jackson and his effects team have found a simple solution to turn the fight against Sauron into a fight against the troll: they have over Sauron’s body simply the CGI model of the troll. There are logical reasons why the scene ultimately didn’t make it into the movie.
The fight against Aragorn and Sauron would have been far too far from the original book. Because Sauron has channeled all his power into the one ring, once lost he cannot take physical form. So it wouldn’t make sense for Aragorn and Sauron to attack each other outside the Black Gate. It was certainly also important to Peter Jackson that Frodo and Sam’s odyssey to Mount Doom took on full meaning.
The decision to remove the fight between Sauron and Aragorn from the film also demonstrates one of the great strengths of the “Lord of the Rings” series: because even when spectacles abound, Peter Jackson knows exactly when to take a step back and practice. diligence. The classic duel, in which the hero meets the villain again, is simply unnecessary in The Lord of the Rings, since it would have had no value here other than to look cool.
