What is ‘Girls for Math’ about?

A few days ago, a project called “Girls for Mathematics” was launched. What is it about?

They will invite girls and young people to be part of a free program which includes a competition and math workshops, aimed at strengthening areas such as algebra, geometry and logic.

This project will be aimed at strengthening quality Mathematical education in young Panamanian women, while encouraging interest in scientific careers.

“Math Girls” will discover talented girls and organize workshops and conferences to promote their empowerment and strengthen their mathematical knowledge from an early age to improve their growth and participation in STEM careers.

The call will be open from April 17 to May 7, 2023 for girls and young people aged 10 to 13 from official and private schools in all school regions in the country.

This academic experience will help participants develop their thinking and increase their knowledge, says Professor Lydia Burgoa, president of the Panama Mathematical Olympiad Foundation.

The project “Girls for Mathematics” is being developed in the framework of National strategic plan for science, technology and innovation (PENCYT 2019-2024) of Senacyt, which within its strategic goals for the education sector has to “contribute to the achievement of inclusive, relevant, fair and quality education”.

The sponsor of the initiative is the National Secretariat Science, technology and innovation (Senacyt), through the Directorate for Innovation in Science and Technology Learning; and the Panama Mathematical Olympiad Foundation.
