Stroke is caused by poor circulation (ischemic stroke) or intracerebral hemorrhage in the brain and is a life-threatening cardiovascular disease.

The new findings of a broad-based study are published in the English-language journal Neurology. Researchers examined whether there was a link between the intake of various alcoholic beverages and the occurrence of strokes.

Neurologist Dr. medical Michael G. Wernz from Neuro Center Bellevue.

These are the results of the research

Study participants were grouped by the type of alcohol they consumed, such as beer, wine, or spirits, and the frequency of their drinking. The researchers also controlled for risk factors such as smoking, high blood pressure, and diabetes. Of the nearly 26,000 people studied, about half have had a stroke at least once in their lives.

Moderate to heavy alcohol consumption, whether wine, beer, or spirits, was unquestionably associated with an increased incidence of stroke. Women fall below reasonable consumption with 7 to 14 glasses of wine (1.5 deciliters per glass) per week, while men go up to 21 glasses per week. Those who drink more, that is, women over the age of 14 and those who drink more than 21 glasses of wine per week, fall into the category of high alcohol consumption.

The low-alcohol group, who drank less than 7 glasses of wine per week, provided exciting insights. While the risk of stroke increased in India, the researchers found a lower risk for population groups in Western Europe and North America. A difference was also found between the effect of wine and other spirits (beer and spirits): According to the study, wine carries the lowest risk of stroke, but this is not necessarily associated with a lower bleeding rate, Wernz emphasizes.

Overall, the study results add to the existing evidence that low wine consumption can supposedly improve cardiovascular health. However, up to 7 glasses of wine per week should be distributed evenly on different days. Drinking a full bottle of wine once a month does not reduce the risk of stroke.

However, the results of the study should be carefully examined, as other factors also play a role in reducing the risk of stroke. For example, those who exercise more in daily life or pay attention to a healthy diet are likely to be at lower risk compared to people who have a less healthy lifestyle, with or without a glass of wine.
