It was indicated: by a lack of competition, but above all by the continued popularity of the “John Wick” series and its protagonist Keanu Reeves has “John Wick: Chapter 4made a record start across the board. A whopping $137.5 million was raised during its opening weekend, with $73.5 million in the US alone. In Germany, 465,000 people redeemed a ticket for Wick’s latest allergy.
In Germany that is enough for the first place in the cinema charts and for the title as the best start of the year so far – on sales and visitor numbers (if you include previews). Also “John Wick 4” the most successful start of the entire series in this country passed. And yet another record that once again underlines that these figures (with the exception of the franchise record) are not self-evident: John Wick 4 is now the 10th best FSK 18 start of all time. Keanu Reeves and Co. managed to attract a large audience to the cinemas despite the high age rating.
The situation on the international stage is very similar: In both the US and all markets outside North America, “John Wick 4” also had the most successful start of the entire series – as well as capturing No. 1 in the US and all 70 (!) other cinema markets. Interesting side note: In North America, “John Wick: Chapter 4” made even more money at launch than Daniels Craig’s farewell appearance in “James Bond: No Time To Die.”
In the US, “John Wick 4” is also the biggest launch of an R-rated movie (the equivalent of our FSK-18, so to speak) and the biggest launch for medium-sized studio Lionsgate since the start of the pandemic.
competition impossible
“Shazam 2: Fury Of The Gods”, which had already started very badly in the cinemas, was no match against the concentrated firepower of John Wick and Co., and was relegated to second place. After all, this is where $ 21.8 million came together last weekend, so that the DC film is now at $ 102.4 million worldwide. However, success looks different.
In Germany, “Shazam 2” reached number 4 in the cinema charts only in its second weekend, behind (of course) “John Wick 4” as well as “Sonne und Beton” (100,000 tickets sold) and “Creed III” (57,000 tickets). The newly launched animated film “High Flyer 2: The Secret of the Great Jewel” (50,000 tickets) ranks 5th.
But “Avatar 2: The Way Of Water” continues to collect viewers at the box office. Last week, the mega blockbuster broke a record that no film has been able to break in 13 years:
