Juan Lasarte has lived in this apartment building in Zurich’s industrial area since 1999. He signed the rental contract of his three and a half bedroom flat for CHF 1,530 based on the plans and after visiting the construction site. Today, the rent in the Trend district is still 1480 francs.

“I am a passionate decorator and have created a dreamy, beautiful and stylish home with many souvenirs from all over the world,” says Juan Lasarte from Zurich, as he tours his tastefully furnished apartment.

His passion can be felt not only in his apartment, but also when he has a story to tell about almost every piece of furniture in the apartment.

For decoration, Lasarte primarily draws inspiration from interior books and travels. She brought some stuff from her travels but she also likes to buy and browse thrift stores and flea markets.

tenants from the start

Lasarte, St. He grew up in the city of Gallen. You can hear it from him, although he has long held Zurich citizenship and has been at home in Zurich’s 5th district industrial zone since 1999. Before that, Kloten lived in ZH for three years but never felt at home there. “I’m a city person and I love Zurich,” says the maître de cabinet of a major airline.

Lasarte got a tip from a colleague for new apartments centrally located in Zurich and contacted management. “I was on the plane just before departure for Tokyo when I got a call from management and was able to set up an appointment,” he recalls.

The superstructure was still under construction and Lasarte signed a lease for the three and a half bedroom flat for CHF 1,530, including side costs based on construction plans and exterior inspection. “It was a huge construction site filled with mud in the winter and zone 5 was not a trendy area back then.”

To date, Lasarte has not regretted his decision, and apparently neither do the other residents of the property. “Almost all of the first inhabitants still live here. A few years ago my rent was even reduced to CHF 1,480. This is a great price for an apartment in the heart of Zurich.”

The 57-year-old doesn’t drive, has public transport right on the doorstep, and rides a bike in the city when the weather is nice.

Big balcony to have fun and celebrate

His flat is on the fourth floor of an apartment building with 30 flats in a development close to the train tracks, just before the entrance to the main station, with a view of Üetliberg.

The balcony is Lasarte’s favorite place where he likes to enjoy the view with a coffee or a glass of wine or serve food to himself and his friends. “I’m not the best chef, but I’m a passionate host and I love to cook,” she says.

The large balcony is accessible from both the bedrooms and the living room, making the apartment overall bright. In addition, Lasarte has stylish lamps and lights throughout the apartment for an atmospheric ambiance.

pleasant relationship with neighbors

Practical walk-in closets can be found in the entrance area of the rental flat. Juan Lasarte also finds the bathroom practical and wonderful. “It’s quite small but equipped with washer and dryer like all apartments in the building. Discussions about the laundry room in our house are unnecessary.»

Communication with the residents is mostly limited to a conversation in the stairwell, but if something is missing in the house, you will be helpful. “While I’m gone, a neighbor takes the keys to my apartment and waters my plants,” Lasarte says. “Whenever I see someone who is now retired, a long-time caretaker, I would occasionally invite them over for a spontaneous glass of wine.”

More storage space in the kitchen

The kitchen, which opens into the dining area, is also quite small. A few years ago Lasarte provided a custom made, used item with wall cabinets above the kitchen counter.

“A tenant who moved out posted this cheap buy offer at the entrance of the house because the next tenant didn’t want this item. I am happy to have this extra storage space for my dishes in the kitchen because I love to cook and I have frequent guests.»

«Multifunctional room» for all kinds of things

In the large living room with a large sofa and Chinese furniture, Lasarte’s passion for his long-standing profession is reflected in his collection of small-stage airplanes. “I wanted to be a flight attendant since I was little. After contracting cancer at a young age, I got my dream job and retrained myself from a trained hairdresser to become a flight attendant,” she says.

He still loves his first job. In his “multifunctional room”, which he calls the smaller bedroom, he has even set up a hairdresser’s area in addition to a guest bed and office space. Above all, her mother and longtime partner Herbert Lippert (58) benefited from this. “I do this for free and only for the people I love because I still enjoy what I’m learning,” Lasarte says.

Future planned for two in Zurich

Lasarte’s bedroom is based on a hotel room in New York supported by his own ideas and finds from China and Bali. “Because I am often away, my home is important to me. A place where I can feel good and always want to come home.”

For the couple, who have been together for 32 years, moving in with their partner in Munich is becoming an increasing problem. Moving to Munich is out of the question for a man from Zurich. “Herbert is already in Zurich with me more than I am in Munich, and there is more than enough room in my flat for both of us.”
