As ETH Zurich announced on Friday, the new sensor can measure body movements very precisely, without the need for electronic components like batteries or chips.
The newly developed thread stretches when you pull it, producing an electrical signal. Signals are transmitted to a smartphone through a special antenna made of conductive thread.
The signal pattern with a constantly fluctuating frequency must then be evaluated by an application – but this needs to be developed first. Tests have shown that the movement patterns, and therefore the signals of the thread, change with increasing fatigue.
The purpose is for the app to timely warn the wearer of smart jogging pants or smart workwear about impending fatigue. This is to prevent fatigue-related injuries.
Then, the researchers now want to turn the prototype into a market-ready product. In this way, smart clothing will be made accessible to a wider audience. Besides its applications in sports and work, its use in rehabilitation medicine may also be considered.
