‘Don’t send amateurs to do Batman’s job’: New DC series takes a real hit

The page enjoys great popularity among many who are interested in movies and series. Because the review aggregator collects countless reviews that have appeared for a movie or a series and calculates a rating average and the so-called tomato meter. The principle of the very rough division into positive and negative assessments can certainly be criticized, but at least an attempt is made It’s about drawing a fairly average rating and some kind of conclusion (the “Critics Consensus”) from all of these reviews – and that brings us to the new DC series “Gotham Knights”.

The is there namely, pretty bad there – currently only two of the eleven reviews are positive (corresponding to a Tomatometer reading of 18 percent). And while the Critics Consensus usually tries to balance the pros and cons of a movie or series, in the case of “Gotham Knights” there is quite a bit devastating conclusion: “Never send amateurs to do a Batman’s job” or in German “You shouldn’t send amateurs to do Batman’s job”.

Fortunately, Batman doesn’t have to go through that anymore

That is on the one hand a fairly clear swipe at those responsible for the series, but on the other hand also an allusion to the plot of the series. Because in “Gotham Knights” Bruce Wayne aka Batman was killed, leaving Gotham City without its well-known protector and forcing other characters to follow in the great footsteps of the Dark Knight (a premise that the series has in common with the video game of the same name, otherwise its but not connected to either project).

At the center of Gotham Knights are Turner Hayes (Oscar Morgan), Bruce Wayne’s adopted son, Duela (Olivia Rose Keegan), the Joker’s supposed daughter, siblings Harper (Fallon Smythe) and Cullen Row (Tyler DiChiara), as well as the hacker Stephanie Brown (Anna Lore). They are all arrested by District Attorney Harvey Dent (Misha Collins) after Batman’s death, but are actually innocent. So they flee with Carrie Kelley aka Robin (Navia Robinson) in search of the real killer or killers…

The first episode “Gotham Knights” was released on March 14, 2023 on The CW, where “Arrow”, “The Flash” and the remaining DC series of the so-called Arrowverse are already running or running. “Gotham Knights” is not (yet) part of the Arrowverse.

In Germany, the episodes appear parallel to the US broadcast on VoD providers such as Amazon Prime Video. Gotham Knights Season 1 has 13 episodes. It is considered very likely that the series will then be canceled, after all, new DC bosses Peter Safran and James Gunn are currently planning a large, unified DC Universe (DCU).
