The 10 Best Short Films from 100 Years of Disney – Picked by the President of Walt Disney Animation!

… and you can watch at least seven of the top 10 short films directly on Disney+!

Disney Animation Studios turns 100! To mark the occasion, there will be Disney100 themed promotions and events in 2023 to celebrate the studio’s proud heritage and, of course, its films – starting with a Super Bowl commercial, many of which brought tears to the eyes. eyes of the fans:

Also part of Disney100 was the visit of Studio President Clark Spencer, who has worked at Disney in various roles since 1993 and in that time has already won two Oscars (for “Zoomania” and “Encanto”) in Berlin.

Here, as part of the Berlinale, he not only presented his ten favorite Disney short films, of which you can watch at least seven live on Disney+, but also found time for an interview with FILMSTARTS, which appears here on the site in full coming weekend.

But first we want you present the ten Disney shorts that Clark Spencer has curated from an incredibly extensive pool of shorts, many of them classics.

Clark Spencer when asked how difficult the selection was for him: “

.”

So here are the top 10 short films selected by Clark Spencer – in reverse chronological order:

“Coming Home” (2021)

“Coming Home” is the second episode of the second season of the short film anthology series “KurzSchluss”, produced for Disney+ – and tells the story of how a young man has to adapt to change every time he visits his hometown. Many things are suddenly not what they were in his youth and youth – and yet it will always remain his home…

*

“Paperman” (2012)

“Paper Man”, which hit theaters in 2012 under the old title “Conquered in Flight” as a supporting film for “Ralph’s Enough”, Not only does “Nachheimkommen” (“Homecoming”) dispense with dialogue, it’s also black and white. Yet director John Kahrs does not deliver dry art here, but a deeply moving love story about a young man who only has a stack of paper to attract the attention of his supposed great love…

*

“Lambert the Scared Lion” (1952)

Surely one of the most famous Disney shorts ever: When a stork is handing out the babies, he accidentally delivers a lion cub to a flock of sheep – and Lambert the lion grows up like a fearful sheep, until his inner lion breaks out of him in the face of great danger…

*

Happy Camping (1950)

Possibly the funniest Donald Duck short film ever! In “Happy Camping”, Donald really just wants to have a relaxing holiday – but then becomes the target of gadflies and gadflies, who identify him as an acorn thief and therefore teach him a lesson he will never forget…

*

“The Old Mill” (1937)

Above all, “The Old Mill” was technically visionary beyond all measure – it was here for the first time Disney’s famous multi-surface camera was used, which made something like a 3D effect possible as early as 1937. As the setting of Johann Strauss’s operetta “The Gypsy Baron”, “The Old Mill” was not only parodied in an episode of “The Simpsons” – none other than anime god Hayao Miyazaki (“Spirited Away”) has dubbed the short as named his favorite Disney movie ever…

*

“The Clock Cleaners” (1937)

Comes in The Clock Cleaners for the first time, the trio of Mickey, Donald and Goofy come together for all sorts of mayhem and pranks – and there is not much more to say about this hilarious and cinematically difficult to overestimate classic…

*

“Steamboat Willie” (1928)

“Streamboat Willie”, featuring the first appearance of Mickey Mouse, is probably the most iconic Disney short film of all time! After all, he didn’t just make the quintessential Disney character world famous overnight – he’s also been part of the Disney Animation logo at the beginning of all of the studio’s films for years.

Everyone is guaranteed to have seen at least fragments or photos of “Steamboat Willie” – and if you don’t know the full short film yet, you should do so as soon as possible, because more film history is guaranteed not to fit in seven minutes …

“Alice’s Wonderland” (1923)

The remaining three shorts are from the very early days of Walt Disney Animation – and are unfortunately not yet available on Disney+: In “Oswald and the Streetcar” (1927) the eponymous rabbit has to overcome all kinds of obstacles to reach the destination with his tram.

Alice’s Wonderland (1923) is one of the first meta-animated films ever, which also combines live-action and animation elements: little Alice visits a film studio and lets the animators show her how an animated film is made. The next night, full of new impressions, she dreams of visiting the realm of cartoons on the train…

The Disney cartoon “Cinderella” (1922) is one of the most successful Disney classics ever – and even freed the studio from a financial dilemma in 1950. The Cinderella fairy tale seems to bring good luck to the studio in general – after all, it was the last of seven short film fairy tales that were so successful in 1922 that the Walt Disney Animation Studios were officially founded the following year!
