For many non-vegans, chicken eggs are almost standard on their shopping list. After all, it’s no wonder they’re often made for breakfast and are often used in sauces, pasta making, or baking. Anyone who always throws bowls away in the process probably isn’t aware of the many beneficial uses of them.

The eggshell consists of three layers. Just over 90 percent is made up of calcium carbonate, or lime, and the rest is made up of micronutrients such as magnesium, calcium phosphate, fluorine, copper, iron, zinc and silicon, as well as some water and oil. There are lots of recipes and suggestions for what the shells can be used for or further processed. Here are the five most popular and easiest to implement ideas for using organic eggs.

With nutrient-rich ingredients, it’s actually not surprising that eggshells are suitable as a plant fertilizer. Especially the lime in it is good for plants and loosens the soil. Unlike lime fertilizers, which you can buy in specialized stores or online, this method is very inexpensive. To use the bark as fertilizer, you must first crush it, for example, with a pestle.

Then there are two options for how to use them. You either mix it directly into the soil and water it, or you put it in a large container and pour half a liter of tap water for each eggshell used. The water is allowed to steep overnight so that as much nutrients as possible are released and then you can water your flowers with it.

Plants can also benefit from this hint of eggshells: sharp-edged splinters are suitable for keeping most snails out of flowers, vegetables or beds. After cleaning, cut the bark into coarse pieces and spread it around the plants with no gaps between them. So you don’t have to use chemicals to fight snails, which is good for the environment. This also protects house snails, some of which are in nature conservation – after all, their shells only allow them to spin.

An environmentally friendly way to grow seedlings is to use eggshells as pots. They are good for cress, for example. For this, the shells should be at least half their original height, after opening the larger the better.

First of all, the bowls are carefully cleaned without being damaged. Then you can make a small hole with a needle in the bottom for excess water to drain. If you are careful while pouring, you can skip this step. Then you fill the eggshells with soil and make a small hole in the middle with your finger and put the plant seeds inside. Now you cover the hole with some soil and you can put water on it. To prevent the small egg containers from tipping over, you can put them inside the egg carton in a sunny and not too hot place. After a while, the first seedlings should form.

Those who love to craft can make new candles from eggshells and leftover candles from old candles. You only need wicks to implement the creative idea. If possible, the eggshells should be two-thirds of their original height after opening so that the candles can then burn for as long as possible.

In a water bath, slowly and without using too high heat, heat the remaining wax in a small bowl. In the meantime, you can thoroughly wash and clean the eggshells. When the wax has finally melted, you can remove any dirt, such as wicks or matchsticks, with a spoon. Now carefully pour wax about an inch from the edges into the eggshells and insert a wick in the middle that reaches the bottom of the egg wax. This should protrude two to three centimeters above the surface of the candle. If the wicks are too long, you can shorten them with scissors. Then let the candles cool overnight and it’s done!

Important: Before lighting it is very important that the candles stand securely and do not tip over.

A simple and ingenious trick for removing burnt residue from pans is to use finely grated eggshells as a scrubbing agent. To do this, first clean the bark, crush it and mix it with a little dishwashing liquid to form a paste.
