Hygge holidays with a dreamy landscape in Copenhagen

The name of the most beautiful city in Scandinavia: Copenhagen. The design metropolis has been one of my favorite places in the world since my first visit ten years ago.

The reason is simple: the city offers everything your heart desires. The transition from vibrant city life to quieter and more relaxed Copenhagen is almost seamless. No wonder countless tourists from all over the world make a pilgrimage to Denmark’s capital every year to absorb the “hygge” attitude to life that reigns there.

The NH hotel group also realized this potential and opened the doors of its first hotel in Scandinavia in September 2021. I was allowed to stay three nights or four days at Copenhagen’s newest five-star hotel, NH Collection Copenhagen.

Large windows provide plenty of light and a great view.

It’s Tuesday morning when I landed in Copenhagen after a two hour flight. The journey to the hotel, located in the picturesque district of Christianshavn, takes only ten minutes, as the city is very well connected with the underground network. After a short walk, I stop in front of the imposing, historic (more on that later) hotel building.

As soon as I climb the escalator in the entrance area, I can feel that I will have a pleasant stay here. And really. When I first enter my room shortly after, it almost knocks me out. What a breathtaking view!

Under a bright blue sky, opposite the famous Copenhagen Opera House, I see the royal palace of Amalienborg. The rest of the room also leaves nothing to be desired. Looking back, the bed turned out to be very comfortable. I was able to choose my preferred type among several pillows.

A feast for the eyes are the extremely large windows that provide plenty of natural light in addition to the magnificent view. The style is warm tones with a Scandinavian expression, with attention to detail such as elegant play of colors in the bathroom and specially designed furnishings throughout the hotel. Numerous Danish furniture designers are prominently represented throughout the house.

Authentic Scandinavian furniture

“It was important to us that the hotel was designed and furnished in an authentic Scandinavian style,” explains Catrine Smed Andersen, the hotel’s marketing manager, as we toured the hotel shortly after my arrival. Especially the history of the building played an important role in this process. For a long time it served as the headquarters of Burmeister & Wain, once Denmark’s largest shipyard, until a bank was later moved into the building.

The property has been extensively renovated from 2018 and finally reopened as a modern hotel in 2021. “We wanted to showcase this legacy appropriately,” says Smed Andersen. Guests are informed about this at the start of their stay, with two fine artworks by a Danish painter hanging in the entrance area.

But this is not just a glimpse into the past. Because although NH Collection Copenhagen has just hosted guests, new concepts are constantly being worked on here. The marketing manager takes me to the roof of the hotel. A cool wind awaits us there. “There will be a rooftop bar here soon,” he told me. Expectation is written all over your face. What a great idea, I think to myself. After all, you can see the whole city from here. Combined with an aperitif, it’s sure to please many guests. At least I do.

No wellness area but very sustainable renovation

But what I noticed during the tour is that there is no wellness or swimming area in the hotel. “There’s a very specific reason for that,” the head of marketing explains to me. A DGNB certificate, ie a sustainable certificate for buildings, was sought from the very beginning of the renovation.

The hotel therefore has a holistic view of sustainability and has both economic and ecological and technical features that are important for sustainability. For example, sea water is used for the plant’s cooling system. “If a pool had been built here, we might forget about the prize.” However, I should mention that the hotel has an excellent fitness room.

Perfect location for sightseeing

When we parted ways again in the lobby, I decided to take a little city tour before dinner. The biggest advantage of NH Collection Copenhagen is that you can reach almost anywhere on foot without any problems. The city center is just a stone’s throw away, with the colorful houses on the Nyhavn promenade, the architecturally unique Copenhagen Opera House, the Tivoli amusement park, as well as the nearly 2 km long shopping street Strøget.

But if you want to act like real Copenhageners, you can take a city tour with a bike you can borrow from the hotel. Guests needing short-term tips for sightseeing or good restaurants can turn to guest service, where the staff know the city like the back of their hand.

My personal recommendation: On fine days you should definitely climb the 400 steps (150 of them outdoors) of the Vor Frelsers Kirke (Saviour’s Church) church tower. At the top, you’ll be rewarded with stunning views of all of Copenhagen.

Fans of the internationally acclaimed Danish TV series will also get their money’s worth at NH Collection Copenhagen. The parliament building in Christiansborg, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the studios of TV1 TV channel from the political series “Borgen” are directly opposite or next to the hotel. Copenhagen Police Station, featured in the hit TV series The Bridge and The Killing, is also within walking distance.

Excellent restaurant and breakfast buffet

When I return to the hotel, I go to the on-site restaurant. The map is very appealing to me. Finally I order very nice pasta with seafood. After dinner, I drink another beer in the stylishly furnished bar of the hotel and evaluate the day. For starters, this wasn’t bad.

The next morning also started well. I can’t remember ever waking up to such a beautiful view. I go down to the breakfast room with a growl in my stomach. I was not disappointed here either. Although I usually prefer a light breakfast, the wide and varied buffet makes me weak. So for once I get eggs and bacon. Valuable!

At my desk by the window, I watch the countless cyclists on their way to work and enjoy the morning atmosphere. If this continues, I will not want to leave NH Collection Copenhagen.
