My first reaction to the message from Blick reader Christoph Baumann* was a dose of skepticism. He sends me pictures of two bottles of Dom Pérignon Rosé 1959 and wants to know the value of the bottles. Does he really own the bottles?
I follow up and ask if he can prove where he bought the champagne and bought it. He can undoubtedly confirm both. In 1992 Baumann purchased the bottles from a French restaurant for around 300 francs each. Did he have any idea where his values would go then?
Dom Pérignon Rosé breaks 1959 records
The incredible story of this wine begins with the first buyer: According to the Dom Pérignon champagne house in the Decanter wine magazine, all the bottles went to the last Iranian Shah, Mohammad Reza Shah Pahlavi (1919-1980). The Shah was known for his passion for luxury and had some of his favorite dishes flown from Paris by Concorde.
In 1979, the Islamic revolution under Ruhollah Khomeini (1902-1989) overthrew the Shah and forced him and his family to flee abroad. He apparently didn’t drink all 306 bottles of Dom Pérignon Rosé in 1959, but since then one or the other single bottle has popped up outside Iran, causing a stunner at wine auctions.
American auction house Acker Merrall auctioned two bottles of rare champagne in 2008, where an unnamed buyer spent US$84,700 on them, the equivalent of about 46,500 francs per 0.75-liter bottle at the time. Since then, wine prices have been falling. Three vendors around the world are now offering the rare champagne and asking for 22,760 to 28,521 francs. This makes it the world’s most expensive pink champagne in a 0.75 liter bottle.
Of course, with such wines, the question always arises whether their drinking quality can be compared with the market price. Finding a definitive answer to this is a personal matter and varies from person to person, and possibly from account balance to account balance as well. That said, there’s no denying that our Blick readers experienced a touch of gold when they bought the two bottles in 1992.
