«Ski camps are not included. “My family didn’t have the money to buy me ski clothes,” says Markos Kartal (39) in his tailor’s workshop in Schönenwerd SO. That’s why he started renting ski suits two years ago. His belief that a good suit that can be used and repaired for a long time is much more environmentally friendly and sustainable. with.
With the “Go snow” snow sports initiative, schools will now be able to easily rent ski outfits from Markos Kartal and his team for children who do not have snow sports outfits. “These kids have to have cool and above all really good ski clothes – not the cheap stuff,” he says emphatically. “You must belong.”
ready for every child
Housed in an old bank building, the studio still has a few freshly washed, expensive snow sports gear. “We don’t want a huge warehouse, we want as much use of our goods as possible,” he says. Kaviya Kulangara (24) looks for the right parts when a teacher submits the rental form online with all the information about the kids.
“We want enough data in the form to make sure everything fits the kids exactly,” says the 39-year-old. The set is packed and labeled for each child. It is then sorted by class so teachers have as little work as possible. In the end, everything is sent to school in a box. «After ski camp, you can put everything in the box. Then we reorder. After all, we have to wash everything professionally and in an environmentally friendly way,” explains a man from Schönenwerder.
Special prices for schools
Isn’t that very costly? “Yes, yes. But we apply a special price for schools that enroll with ‘Go Snow’ because we want all children to be able to go to the mountains,” he says. However, Kartal and his team are not pure. “We calculate exactly. “We don’t make a lot of money with our Outdoor Service company, but it pays off for us.”
Under the name Outdoor Service, Schönenwerder rents out everything you need for an adventure in nature: from snow sports gear to stoves, from tents to bike trailers. But above all, all kinds of clothes necessary to enjoy wonderful days in nature.
“In addition to families and individuals, we also rent to companies or hoteliers who want to give their guests a real raincoat for the trip,” he says. Children’s ski clothing in particular is sustainable: Children grow up and always need a larger size. Parents can rent ski suits and return them so they can order a larger size next time.
Rental thanks to tailor’s workshop
Started leasing in March 2020. “And I’ve had many sleepless nights,” she admits. Because inquiries came faster than he had the material to hire. “We’ve always done everything possible,” he says. The main reason for this is that he has established good relations with outdoor companies for a long time, thanks to the tailoring he inherited from his family. As a result, they were willing to sell him supplies or enter into a collaboration right away.
Clothing rental works mainly because the tailor shop is in the same building. Broken zippers can be replaced immediately and the jacket can be rented again. In addition, there are always enough helping hands.
140 dresses for a movie shoot
The entrepreneur continues to receive unique requests, such as those from a costume designer. For a movie shoot in the Alps, the costume designer had to buy tons of outdoor outfits. So what happens to these clothes after the shoot? Instead of buying a costume designer, he met Kartal. An hour later it became clear: 140 outdoor clothes will be rented. After the shooting, the clothes are returned and can be used by the next mountain friends.
Above all, such success stories of sustainability make the young family man very happy, whose twins are not yet two years old. But most of all, she is very happy when one of the gym club tells her that they want to take two refugee children to the ski camp, but they don’t have snow suits and they can help them.
