This is what many Marvel fans have been waiting for: After becoming a real crowd pleaser among fans of superheroes and anti-heroes as Frank Castle on Netflix, his comeback after the turbulent past months is actually just around the corner: John Bernthal will reprise the role of the Punisher – for “Daredevil: Born Again“.
The usually excellently networked and well-informed trade magazine now reports to have heard from a source that Bernthal will be part of the upcoming Marvel series on Disney+. There’s been no official confirmation from Marvel as of yet, as the However, it has had a reputation for years as a particularly reliable source in the dream factory, so it’s probably only a matter of time before the report is confirmed. So it really looks like Rosario Dawson spilled the beans last August.
After making his Punisher debut in the Netflix hit “Daredevil,” Bernthal eventually got his own series, which ran for two seasons from 2017 to 2019. Unlike “Iron Fist,” “Luke Cage,” or “Jessica Jones,” “The Punisher” was the only Marvel Netflix series besides “Daredevil” to inspire audiences and fans alike. Accordingly, the latest developments surrounding his return should now be solemnly taken up.
With Frank Castle, aka the Punisher, the third main character from “Daredevil” returns in “Born Again”. Also back are Vincent D’Onofrio, who has already returned in the Marvel series “Hawkeye” as Wilson Fisk aka Kingpin, and of course Charlie Cox, whose Matt Murdock/Daredevil we now have in “She-Hulk: The Lawyer” on Disney+ – and, of course, during his critically acclaimed theatrical appearance (which we don’t want to spoil at this point for anyone who hasn’t seen the film in question, even though the movie has a few days left on its belt).
What can we expect in “Daredevil: Born Again”?
After the good news, first a downer: It may be a while before we see Daredevil: Born Again. The start originally planned for the spring of 2024 will probably not come. Even if the reason for this is more than obvious: Kevin Feige recently commented on the increasingly criticized Marvel oversaturation – and promised improvement. In the future, for example, it must be ensured that all heroes and their stories also have the opportunity and therefore the time to be in the spotlight.
The problem with the “Daredevil” sequel: the series should be based on the events of the yet-to-be-released series”echo” build up. According to the latest reports, the format around the heroine Maya Lopez aka Echo (Alaqua Cox), introduced in “Hawkeye”, would not be released as planned in 2023, but only in 2024. So for now it is their time to shine, but that doesn’t mean we don’t get to see Daredevil’s crowd favorites sooner:
Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio will return as Murdock/Daredevil and Fisk/Kingpin in Echo, and will play central roles in the Hawkeye spin-off.
Meanwhile, the recordings of “Daredevil: Born Again” have started. Part of Phase 5 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the series kicks off right away with a whopping 18 episodes.
