Wild garlic sausage, wild garlic cheese or just a delicious salad flavored with wild garlic – all this will cheer the gourmet at the beginning of the season. But watch out! Wild garlic leaves look like poisonous autumn crocus (Colchicum autumn) Deceptively similar: The leaves of wild garlic are petiolate and elliptical and emit a characteristic garlic odour, while the leaves of autumn crocus are sessile, lanceolate and odorless.

How do you distinguish wild garlic from lily-of-the-valley and autumn crocus?

  • Wild garlic season is from early March to mid-May.
  • Wild garlic begins to bloom in early May.
  • Wild garlic can easily be confused with lily-of-the-valley or autumn crocus.

  • Rule of thumb: wild garlic leaves smell garlic when crushed, lily of the valley and autumn crocus leaves do not.

  • In wild garlic, the underside of the leaf is matte, while the lily of the valley is shiny. With the autumn crocus, both the underside and the top of the leaves are shiny.

  • Wild garlic leaves each have only one stem growing from the ground.

Unlike the edible wild garlic, the autumn crocus contains a strong poison. This leads to severe poisoning symptoms even after eating a few leaves. (SDA)
