From March to May, tulips of all colors and shapes bloom again in the gardens. The blooming time of tulips varies according to the variety, location and weather conditions. Early-blooming varieties include, for example, rather small wild tulips. A little later, the parrot tulips bloom with double flowers. They are currently in trend. Early, mid and late blooming tulip varieties are ideal for planting in the garden. So you can enjoy the spring flowers blooming in the garden for a few months.

Tulips are not demanding on flowers, require very little maintenance and can grow for years. “But after four to five years, some tulips may no longer bloom and need a new location,” explains Othmar Ziswiler, Head of Commerce and Consumer at BLICK Jardin Suisse. In this case, the bulbs can be simply dug up and stored in a dry place in the basement until they are planted in a new place in the fall. It is important that the tulip bulbs do not rot.

Good place for tulips

«Tulips thrive especially well in a sunny or semi-shaded location with well-drained soil. Tulips don’t hold water,” says Ziswiler. Bulbs are planted from October to December, as long as the ground isn’t frozen.

After flowering, the stem and leaves should be left until they dry and should not be cut until then. In this way, the tulip bulbs will receive the necessary nutrients and water again, and the flowers will develop again the next spring. Tulip bulbs can remain in the soil after flowering.

Anyone who misses planting tulip bulbs in the fall can now buy potted tulips from the gardener and plant them, for example, in a flower pot or a decorative pot. After the flowering period, these bulbs can also be kept in pots or planted in a suitable place in the garden in autumn.

Under perennials or among roses, depending on your preference, tulips always hold up well in the garden for years to come and are a joy as a harbinger of spring. It is a matter of taste to harmoniously coordinate or mix colors harmoniously.

Plant tulip bulbs in spring

Planting tulips in the spring is possible only with a trick. It is important to choose the right tulip bulbs: they need to be very strong. Spring is not the best time for planting. Only tulip bulbs that are firm to the touch stand a chance. If you plant tulips in the spring, you should consider a narrow time frame. The bulbs should grow indoors for five weeks and in the garden in mid-May. A mixture of sand and potting soil is ideal for dressing. The bulbs are placed in the ground, not planted and only vigorously watered once. As soon as the shoot tips appear, it’s time to plant the bulbs in the garden. The planting hole should be deep enough, as the tips of the shoots should protrude slightly from the ground.

Where do tulips grow best?

Tulips are spring flowers and look best when placed next to other spring flowers such as hyacinths and daffodils. You can mix the soil with some sand. In this way, the bulbs do not get too wet and the risk of rotting is eliminated. Tulips prefer sunny places. This also offers them good conditions for them to mature in summer.

Proper care for tulips in a vase

If you bring spring flowers into your home as a bouquet, you can use them to add atmospheric color accents. According to expert Ziswiler, there are a few things to consider when purchasing to make the spring bouquet in the vase last longer.

Flowers and stems should look strong, with flower heads not too open or drooping. Leaves and stems should not show any brown spots that indicate rot already. Tulip stems should be shortened at home by about two centimeters with a straight cut with a sharp knife, and before they harden, unnecessary leaves should be removed. Tulip stems should just sit in a little fresh water in the vase.

However, since tulips absorb a lot of water, they must be filled with fresh water repeatedly so that the tulip heads do not sag. It is also recommended to prune the stems again after a few days. Direct sunlight or placing the bouquet near radiators will not get the tulips. Ziswiler also recommends wrapping the tulips in newspaper overnight to help them last longer in the vase. Tulips should stand upright longer in the vase, and even their slightly drooping heads can stand upright again.
