“Star Wars” hardcore fans are all too familiar with the discussion of when exactly which event takes place. After all, it is the absolute exception that, as was the case recently with “Andor”, the addition of a year tells us exactly the time connection. But actually you can combine a lot with each other in an excellent way. Now, however, there is a confusion that may never have existed in the saga.
To break it all down, we need to start in order – with an interview The Mandalorian creator Jon Favreau co-hosted with his partner Dave Filoni, director Rick Famuyiwa and actress Katee Sackhoff on the podcast s has given. In it, he was actually talking about Grogu’s history in two worlds: the world of the Jedi and the world of the Mandalorian.
Favreau’s First Statement: ‘Many Years’ & ‘Two Years’
in the middle of this statement Favreau explains that Grogu “spent many years with the Mandalorian and then with Luke [Skywalker] to practice and we’ve been away from him for two years.”
Twice in this sentence causes confusion. Because if Grogu spent “many years” with The Mandalorian, that means the events of the first two seasons of The Mandalorian spanned several years. Until now, most fans assumed that everything will happen in one year.
The phrase is quite easy to catch. The term is an exaggeration, you have to interpret “many” very narrowly, in this case “many years” could mean two or three years. Finally it can be said that in the course of the first two seasons and the time jump between them, a total of two to a maximum of three years have already passedso a little more time than expected.
However, his explanation that we were two years away from him then set the internet on fire. It’s partially clear that there’s a full two years between “Chapter 16,” the end of The Mandalorian Season 2, and Grogu’s return in “Chapter 6” of The Book of Boba Fett. That would be completely absurd, because it means, among other things, that Boba Fett (or Ahsoka Tano for that matter) spent a lot of time twiddling his thumbs and that Luke Skywalker wasn’t a very good teacher.
The wildest discussions broke out on the Internet – also because the statement can be read a little differently than the author of these lines understood it. Favreau may have wanted to refer to the real break between seasons 2 and 3 of The Mandalorian. Because this is about two years.
But fortunately there is the possibility of clarification … or …?
Favreau’s second statement: 2 years? 1 year? 0 years?
took the chance to succeed Jon Favreau. Unfortunately, reporter Marc Malkin swapped the two issues of “many years” and “two years” in his question. Because he claimed that Favreau said Grogu “was with Luke Skywalker for many years” – and that’s not true. A confused Favreau is still trying to shed some light on the matter. See for yourself first:

Favreau only addresses the second problem with this answer: how long was Grogu with Luke Skywalker? So how much time has passed between the end of The Mandalorian Season 2 and Grogu’s return in The Book of Boba Fett Season 1?
Favreau’s first answer: About as much time as ours has passed between episodes! The second season finale of “The Mandalorian” aired in mid-December 2020, Grogu’s return on “Boba Fett” in early February 2022 – ergo: just over a year, 13.5 months to be exact. However, Favreau does not stop at the answer, but corrects himself several times
Favreau’s second/third/fourth and then last answer: anything between 0 and 2 years old! Favreau goes on to explain how much time has passed between the end of Season 2 “The Mandalorian” and Grogu’s return in Season 1 “The Book of Boba Fett”, but then jumps back and forth a bit as he also seems to be trying to create a time gap with the current third season. Moreover, he corrects himself several times, eventually it becomes the very diplomatic “something between 0 and 2 years” and not really clear what period he means: the distance between the two “Mandalorian” seasons or just Grogu’s time Hatch?
The solution: how much time has passed?
So Favreau hasn’t really cleared up the confusion and no one can currently do that except himself or Lucasfilm. Even “Star Wars” top gunner Pablo Hidalgo has stated that it is his policy not to talk about a series while it is in progress. He wants to leave that to the series himself – which at least gives hope that there may be a better time division in upcoming dialogues.
But we still have an idea of the time that is probably really over. We assume that Grogu only spent a few months, a year at the most (but probably less) with Luke. However, there will likely be a bigger leap in time for the third season. That shows the opening scene, where we see how far Nevarro has evolved over time. That’s way too much progress to cancel an entire corner of the country.
We therefore assume that it has taken about 2 to 3 years from the very first episode of “The Mandalorian” to now. There were time jumps between seasons 1 and 2 and between 2 and “The Book of Boba Fett” and then back to 3, but these would range from a few months to a year at the most.
