New chamber found in Cheops Pyramid in Giza

The existence of a surprisingly large chamber was confirmed by an endoscope inserted through a narrow gap between the stones, said Technical University of Munich (TUM), which was involved with a team in the study.

Finally, the find is particularly important because the Egyptian pyramid is considered one of the best-studied structures in the world, TUM scientists announced on Thursday.

New corridor longer than five meters

According to preliminary estimates, the new corridor above the pyramid’s actual entrance even exceeds the initially assumed size of at least five meters.

According to the announcement, Christian Grosse, Head of Nondestructive Testing at TUM, said that discovering a void in a pyramid is something special – even more so in this dimension. The Munich-based company has been a part of the international research team Scanpyramids since 2019, which has been studying the Egyptian pyramids with different tools and technologies since 2015.

Measurements made with muon tomography, an imaging method for three-dimensional imaging of large-volume objects, suggested the existence of a cavity. Grosse’s TUM team used methods such as radar and ultrasound for closer inspection. This made an important contribution to the discovery, he said.
