Netflix definitely showed the right instincts when the streamer gave the go-ahead for a fourth season of “Outer Banks” even before the start of the third season. The fact is: the popularity of the adventure series is not only unbroken, but has risen again in direct comparison.
According to Netflix’s published weekly figures, was the third season of Outer Banks approximately 155 million hours watched by all Netflix subscribers worldwide in the first four days after publication. The series has easily taken first place in the global top 10 of the currently most popular series on Netflix, which occupied the fourth season of the stalker hit “You – Du will love me” in the past two weeks.
And even if the new episodes of “Outer Banks” and “You” had started in parallel, the latter with 92 million hours of first-week watch time would have lost the rankings – although the comparison is also a bit laggy, since it was from the fourth. Only the first half of the “You” season was initially released, which is why the replenishment is only half as long as it is now with “Outer Banks” and for that reason alone there are fewer hours.
The most successful ‘Outer Banks’ season?
The second season of “Outer Banks” itself gives a better comparison, in the beginning it had “only” 100 million viewing hours. While the season had one day less at the time due to a Friday start to pay through in the first week’s hourly stats (season 3 now started on Thursday), one more day probably wouldn’t have changed the fact that season 3 was a result of the previous season’s eclipses, so the series has apparently even gained some popularity.
There’s no data on the first season (the official Netflix stats don’t go back that far), but since the hype surrounding the series had to start at the time, you can assume that the opening season could not keep up with the values of the third season in the first days, so that the latter is now on the verge of becoming the most successful of the series. Here too, however, the coming weeks must show whether the new season has perseverance.
Meanwhile, we are still a long way from the really big Netflix megahits (for comparison: “Wednesday” had 341 million hours of viewing in week 1, the fourth season of “Stranger Things” had 287 million hours), but “Outer Banks” is still a great success for the streaming provider and will certainly remain so when the treasure-hunting Pogues around John B. (Chase Stokes) return in season 4. However, it is not yet clear when that will be.
