Just before the cinemas closed for the first time, “The Spy from Next Door” was released in German cinemas in March 2020. In the US, on the other hand, the theatrical release has already been canceled, Amazon Prime Video took over the film and the light agent action comedy hit a nerve. According to data analytics company ScreenEngine, the movie starring Marvel star Dave Bautista became the third most watched streaming title of all of 2020 – even ahead of the Netflix action hit “Tyler Rake: Extraction”. Only Borat 2 and the Disney Plus release of Hamilton were streamed more this year.
Amazon Prime Video has now ordered its own sequel. “My Spy 2: The Eternal City‘ is now appearing worldwide directly on Amazon Prime Video. The focus is once again on CIA agent and super spy JJ (Dave Bautista), who once again teams up with little Sophie (Chloe Coleman). The girl manages to convince him to watch the school trip to Venice as a supervisor. And there they both find themselves in the middle of a plot by international terrorists targeting JJ’s boss David Kim (Ken Jeong) and his son Collin, who is Sophie’s best friend.
“My Spy 2: The Eternal City” with Anna Faris alongside Dave Bautista
In addition to Bautista, Coleman and Jeon, Kristen Schaal also returns as JJ’s rather nerdy, much more tech-savvy colleague Bobbi. The quartet has been joined by a number of new stars, most notably Anna Faris. It is not yet known what role the actress, known from “Scary Movie” and the sitcom “Mom”, will play. But since the announcement states that there will be “a dynamic storyline with twists and fun performances and a bit of romance too,” we can very well imagine that she will embody a love interest for JJ (Sophie’s teacher?).
In addition, Craig Robinson (“Brooklyn Nine-Nine”) and German star Flula Borg, known for “The Suicide Squad” and “Pitch Perfect 2”, have already been confirmed for the cast. Like its predecessor, Peter Segal directs (“Manhattan Queen”, “Get Smart”). Filming has only just begun, so a release on Amazon Prime Video could even take place in late 2023, but spring 2024 is more likely.
