Daniela Arroyo González has become the first transgender woman to compete for the crown of Miss Universe Puerto Rico, the organization in charge of the local beauty pageant announced.
The Miss Universe Puerto Rico organization describes Arroyo González as “a public relations graduate who wants to create positive change through communication. She longs to live in a less polarized society, where differences can be appreciated and embraced as something positive that unites instead of something that divides.” “
Arroyo González appeared on Notice local competition in the past, however, the last one did not pass casting.
In an interview with “Primera Hora”, Arroyo González commented that he started his activism for rights of transgender women from his home, confronted the family and made it clear who he was.
He also faced several of them in his school life obstaclesBut when she passed them, she realized that her voice was powerful and heard, so she didn’t want to reserve that privilege for herself.
“I said to myself, ‘If I give myself respect, if I’ve been able to develop this strength and this strong voice, why not use it to help other people who may not have that, who didn’t have the same access to information, parents who understand them?’ That led me to create something bigger,” he told the newspaper.
The candidate is well-known on the Caribbean island for winning a federal lawsuit in 2018 against the government of Puerto Rico that allowed people to change their gender in birth certificate.
Likewise, Arroyo González is a co-founder of the company Trans Youth Coalition of Puerto Rico.
Spain’s Angela Ponce made history at Miss Universe 2018, held in Thailand, becoming the first transgender woman to compete at the pageant in its more than 60-year history.
Miss United States, R’Bonney Gabriel was crowned in January of this year as Miss Universe in New Orleans (Southern USA), with the mission to be the face of the new phase of the organization focused on the defense of gender equality and women’s rights.
