The MyFrenchFilmFestival, which had set itself the task of placing (young) French cinema at the center of international attention for a month, ended yesterday, Monday. This means that this year’s winners from the program of the 13th edition, which includes twelve feature films and even 17 short films, are known.
Once again, the prize winners were determined by a jury of filmmakers, an international press jury and an audience vote, open to anyone who had seen one or more of the films that were simultaneously available online in many countries around the world.
You can view the full program here.
THE GRAND PRIZE OF THE INTERNATIONAL JURY
This year, the international jury consisted of filmmakers Emily Atef (“One day we will tell each other everything”), Chie Hayakawa (“Plan 75”), Sergei Loznitsa (“Air War – The Natural History of Destruction”), Juho Kuosmanen (“Department No. 6”) and Albert Serra (“Pacifiction”) cast exceptionally well. Together they continued the black humorous tragic comedy”No fucks given“ agreed.
Directed by Emmanuel Marre and Julie Lecoustre, the film stars ‘Blue is a Warm Color’ star Adèle Exarchopoulos as Cassandre, a low-cost flight attendant who tries to combat the stress of work with parties, alcohol, drugs and pointless Tinder sex. .
Statement of the jury: “With a great performance by Adèle Exarchopoulos, the film explores a dehumanized in-between world where flight attendants work for in-air supermarkets. With strong creative choices and bold, gritty cinematography, the two directors portray a modern-day disease: the desire and deceptive dream to escape the face of the earth.”
THE PUBLIC PRICES
Audiences, meanwhile, tuned in to the dreamy romantic comedy”The world after usas best feature film in the competition. Director Louda Ben Salah follows the tradition of the Nouvelle Vague with great ease: Labidis (Aurélien Gabrielli) dreams of the publication of his first book and of great love. But the reality is different: Labidis is single and has not progressed beyond a short story. But then he meets the drama student Elisa (Louise Chevillotte) in Lyon, who turns his life completely upside down…
Meanwhile, the audience award for best short film goes to the 13-minute Cataracte by Faustine Crespy and Laetitia de Montalembert: The eccentric Nicky is an outsider who decides to use drugs to commit suicide. She then wants to entrust her dog Izy to her neighbor – but when he rejects the dog, Nicky starts a race against time to avert the impending overdose…
THE AWARDS OF THE INTERNATIONAL PRESS JURY
The prize of the press jury consisting of film critics from Greece, South Africa, Thailand, Argentina, Moldova, the Netherlands and the USA will go in 2023 to “The magneticby Vincent Mael Cardona. Set in the early 1980s, the coming-of-age story tells of the growing up of shy Philippe (Thimotée Robart), whose enthusiasm for sound engineering dreams of becoming a radio DJ.
Statement of the jury: “In his feature debut, Vincent Maël Cardona mixes a delicate correspondence love story with the grief of losing a brother, set to the rhythm by the energy of a powerful soundtrack. With a keen sense of composition, the director reveals the frustrations and hopes of youth: a true love letter to the 1980s.”
The prize for the best short film, also awarded by the press jury, went to “Paloma” by Hugo Barin.
The jury’s statement: “Director and actor Hugo Bardin draws a moving and surprising love story between two courageous characters. The poetry of the script combined with the power of the acting brings out the emotions, fears and hopes that all great films are made of.”
