“Avatar 2” and “Titanic” in a crazy duel in the list of the most successful films of all time

“Avatar 2” and “Titanic” in a crazy duel in the list of the most successful films of all time

On the weekend it was time for a short moment. “Avatar 2: The Way Of Water” became the world’s third highest-grossing film of all time. But “Titanic” is currently running again as a re-release in cinemas – and so successful that the third position was immediately recaptured. Very soon “Avatar 2” will take 3rd place, yes Currently, in the frenzied duel between two James Cameron movies, “Titanic” is just ahead of “Avatar 2” at $2.214 billion at $2.217 billion. Still at the top are “Avatar” – also from Cameron – with $ 2.924 billion and “Avengers: Endgame” with $ 2.799 billion.

By the way, there was also a similar duel between “Titanic” and “Avatar 2” in Germany. This was about the title of the highest grossing film of all time. “Avatar 2” would have got that this weekend too, but “Titanic” also played in theaters here and played in enough to stay just ahead of “Avatar 2”. The changing of the guard on this German all-time ranking will only take place in the coming days.

German cinema lists: “Avatar 2” continues to dominate

Nevertheless, “Avatar 2” remains at the top of the German cinema charts for the ninth weekend in a row. A further 210,000 tickets were sold this weekend – again more than any other film.

Behind that is “De drie ??? – Legacy of the Dragon”, the most successful start of cinema year 2023 so far, remains extremely popular and is in second place with around 150,000 visitors. Reboot “Magic Mike – The Last Dance” attracted about 110,000 people to the cinemas this weekend. “Puss in Boots – The Last Wish” and “A Man Named Otto” close out the top 5 in terms of tickets sold with just under 80,000 and just under 60,000 tickets sold respectively. “Titanic” missed this with some 53,000 tickets, but if you look at sales, the classic starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet would rank fourth due to the higher ticket price (3D, length). A sensational result for a film that is 25 years old and that many people know by heart to a large extent.

Incidentally, “Knock At The Cabin” had a very disappointing start in Germany. Over the weekend, only 35,000 tickets were sold for the new movie by twist master M. Night Shyamalan.

US cinema charts: “Magic Mike 3” comics to the top

The North American cinema charts have suffered a lot from the Super Bowl. America’s greatest sporting event captivated many in front of the TV instead of going to the cinema. Only $ 8.2 million was enough for “Magic Mike – The Last Dance” to take first place. However, it is impressive that the third part of the series with Channing Tatum as a stripper succeeded, even if it only had a relatively small start in 1,500 cinemas. No movie in the entire top 10 U.S. cinema charts played on as few screens as the sequel, which was originally planned as a pure streaming launch.

In second place was “Avatar 2” at $6.9 million, just ahead of the re-release of “Titanic” at $6.4 million. Behind James Cameron’s double, the comedy “80 For Brady” (no German release date yet) with $6 million and last week’s leader “Knock At The Cabin” complete the US top 5 with $5.5 million.
