The Natural History Museum London received 39,000 images for the “Wildlife Photographer of the Year” award – then shortlisted 25 impressive images. The photograph of a snow leopard in northern India won with a record 60,466 votes.
The image of the extremely rare big cat was captured using a camera trap German photographer Sascha Fonseca installed in the mountains of Ladakh in northern India.
The image is entitled “World of the Snow Leopard” and apart from the impressive motif, it is also special because snow leopards are on the Red List of endangered species. There are an estimated 6,500 of their species living in the wild – due to its cunning and habitat, the snow leopard is considered one of the most difficult wildlife to photograph.
The Natural History Museum London has compiled a shortlist of 25 images for the vote. These photos were also nominated:
