Disney announces “Frozen 3” +++ “Toy Story 5” – all movie news at a glance

Disney not only announced sequels to three popular animated films, but also announced that it would lay off several thousand employees. In addition, streaming service Disney Plus registered a subscriber loss for the first time since its inception.

Four years after Frozen 2 hit theaters, Disney CEO Bob Iger has announced that a third installment is in the works. “Frozen 3” will likely tie in with Anna and Kristoff’s relationship and their shared responsibilities for Arendelle.

A theatrical release has not yet been announced, but it may be some time before that happens. It took “Frozen 2” four years to hit theaters after the film was greenlit. Given the franchise’s success, it wouldn’t be a surprise if the sequel hits theaters sooner.

Another animated film in the works is the fifth part of “Toy Story”. The first film was released in 1995 and was the first fully computer-animated feature film. The four existing “Toy Story” films have grossed more than $3 billion in total, making it one of Disney’s largest animated franchises.

Again, Disney has not yet announced a release date. Bob Iger did say that he would soon be able to say more about the announced animated films.

The third animated film Iger announced is a sequel to 2016’s Zootopia. “I’m excited to announce today that our animation studios have sequels in the works for some of our most popular franchises: ‘Toy Story’, ‘Frozen › and ‹Zootopia› We’ll be sharing more on these productions shortly, but this is a great example of how we’re leveraging our unique brands and franchises,” Iger said on the Q1 conference call.

Last year, Disney released Zootopia+, a six-part series of shorts featuring the stories of three different characters from the film.

Launched in 2020, Disney Plus has quickly become one of the most popular streaming service providers. Now Disney Plus is losing subscribers for the first time. The drop in Disney Plus subscribers – which was more than analysts had expected – was entirely due to a drop of 3.8 million subscribers to Disney Plus Hotstar – the version of the service offered in India and parts of Southeast -Asia. Last year, Disney lost the streaming rights to Indian Premier League cricket matches. Disney Plus has 161 million subscribers worldwide.

In addition to the drop in subscribers, Disney also announced some bad news: About 7,000 entertainment jobs will be cut as part of a corporate restructuring estimated to generate $5.5 billion in cost savings.
