When it was announced that the streaming service Paramount + would also come to Germany, many “Star Trek” fans feared that the final third season of the series “Star Trek: Picard” – unlike the first two seasons – would no longer be available on Amazon Prime Video is running in this country. The fourth season of Star Trek: Discovery was very similar.
Surprisingly, it no longer celebrated its German premiere on Netflix, but on the online platform Pluto TV, which belongs to Paramount, before landing on the new streaming service for the German launch of Paramount+ on December 8, 2022. It didn’t help that Netflix released the series misleadingly marketed as an original, in fact it comes from Paramount+ (formerly: CBS All Access) – which is exactly what applies to “Picard” (which in turn is from Amazon in this country as called an own original).
Finally, Amazon gave the all-clear for all Prime subscribers: Also the ten episodes of Picard’s third season will find their way to Amazon Prime Video a day after their US premiere in Germany. It starts on February 17, 2023. And yet the whole thing now takes an exciting Paramount twist: as announced in an official press release, the “Picard” degree begins at the same time as Amazon’s release, in fact also on Paramount +.
Win-win for “Star Trek” fans
A new deal between the two providers will keep everyone happy: anyone with a Prime subscription can continue to watch the series on Prime Video, while all Trekkies who have already purchased a Paramount+ subscription to exclusive “Trek” titles can do the same value for money.
This makes Paramount+ the number 1 source of “Star Trek” content in this country, which is currently not available in such a bundle from any other provider. The platform brings together not only all seven live-action series of the franchise (including the acclaimed latest Star Trek: Strange New Worlds) and the children’s animated series Star Trek: Prodigy, but also all 13 feature films from across the universe. In the course of the year, the animated comedy series “Star Trek: Lower Decks” will also be added, which – like “Picard” – will likely run in parallel on Paramount+ and Amazon Prime Video.
Big “Next Generation” reunion
Making “Star Trek: Picard” as accessible as possible in this way couldn’t have come at a better time. Finally, for the finale, especially for fans of the cult series “Spaceship Enterprise: The Next Century” aka “Star Trek: The Next Generation”, a lot happens again when ex-Enterprise Captain Jean-Luc Picard joins the depths of the space faces a formidable new threat.
In addition to Patrick Stewart in the title role, all the other mainstays of the original series will be supporting this time – from Jonathan Frakes (Will Riker) and Marina Sirtis (Deanna Troi) to Gates McFadden (Beverly Crusher) and LeVar Burton (Geordi LaForge). to Michael Dorn (Worf) and Brent Spiner (Data/Lore). We’ll soon find out how they all come back together:
Starting February 17, 2023, new episodes of Star Trek: Picard will be available every Friday on Amazon Prime Video AND Paramount+.
