If you look at the box office numbers from last weekend, everything seems normal at first glance. “Avatar 2: The Way Of Water” still reigns at the top of the cinema charts. *yawn*. James Cameron’s mega blockbuster managed to book almost 392,000 viewers last weekend, dominating the German cinema landscape for the seventh week in a row. But stop! Shortly after, a real surprise followed:
The movie theater reboot of the Rocky Beach cult detectives came in second place with a fantastic box office result A total of almost 330,000 tickets for “The Three ??? – Legacy of the Dragon’. A top value – and there would certainly have been a few more …
… if the Na’vi match had also taken place at a later date. In many places, “The three ??? – Legacy of the Dragon” classified as a typical youth cinema and the last performances started around 5pm. It may work the same way on weekends, but during the week it is not so easy for many employees to be in the cinema during this time.
One probably overslept a bit, how big is the “The Three ???” fan community actually – and that it not only consists of parents with children and young radio play fans, but there is also a large and especially childless fan base, which is also interested in how the cult detectives are faring in the quasi-reboot from Germany and whether this film is the captures the essence of the radio play sequence somewhat better than “The Three???” – The Mystery of Ghost Island”.
“The three question marks”: also for adults!
I’ll gladly admit it. I am a heart and soul “The Three ???” fan since childhood. A true Rocky Beach ultra, if you will, who still walks around town with a fan’s backpack, attended all the live radio play tours, and heard every episode countless times. In short: “The Three ???” is for me more than just a radio play for children and young people. The three smart guys from Rocky Beach have been with me all my life – and I’m now in my thirties and thus no longer the core audience of the detective radio play series. At least you should think so, right?
However, do you look around at the live events around “The Three ???” then a different picture quickly emerges. It is not the irritated parents with nagging children who can be found there. If you meet parents and offspring there, both parties are usually ardent fans of the cult detectives.
But it soon turns out that there are also a lot of childless fans of all ages on these radio plays. Probably even the majority – and so the live events & radio play tours of the cult detectives do not start at child-friendly times, but usually in the evenings.
Performances after 6 p.m. are also welcome!
Perhaps the cinema operators and those responsible at Sony would have been a little more daring from the start and treat the film to a daily performance specifically aimed at an adult audience and is not clearly designed for a U20 audience.
It is quite possible that even the almost impossible would have come true and “The three ??? – Legacy of the Dragon” would even have been the movie that would have robbed “Avatar 2” of its top spot. Although it still could.
By the way, it was rumored that “The three ??? – Legacy of the Dragon” does not attract a purely youth audience. If you look at the seasons of the current cinema week, it is noticeable that the main seasons of the film are still around 5 p.m., but there are now also some cinemas that show the film at a later time – the Cinespace Multiplex cinema in Bremen even showed the film at 10:30 pm on weekends!
Unfortunately, this is still the exception. ‘Three Question Marks’ fans who enjoy going to the cinema in the evenings will find themselves staring into the tube in many places this weekend, because even in a big city like Berlin there is only one movie theater that shows “The Three ??? – Legacy of the Dragon” between February 2nd and February 8th after 6pm! I am at peace with it myself and have agreed with my friends to go to the cinema early on Sunday afternoon. And it is certainly something if you have something left of the day after enjoying the film.
