The DC Universe is on the eve of a huge upheaval, that has been clear for some time. And since January 31, 2023, the grand plan for the new universe called DCU is known – or at least part of it. However, it’s unclear how some of the established heroes will move on. Superman (Henry Cavill), Batman (am Affleck) and Black Adam (Dwayne Johnson) are definitely out. But what about Aquaman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, Shazam and Blue Beetledebuts in August 2023?
Jason Momoa/Aquaman
Jason Momoa will almost certainly be part of the new DCU, the only question is in what role. Officially, “Aquaman 2: The Lost Kingdom” (German cinema release: December 21, 2023) is the last film of the old DCEU, but in the portrayal of DC bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran, this film is intended to go straight to the first real DCU movie “Superman: Legacy” – whatever that should look like.
So maybe Arthur Curry will actually be part of the DCU as well Because according to Safran, Jason Momoa would like an Aquaman trilogy. However, Momoa also wants to play the bounty hunter Lobo – the last word has apparently not been spoken here and the decision must ultimately depend on the success or failure of “Aquaman 2”. However, one thing Gunn reiterated: “Jason Momoa will not be playing two characters.”
Gal Gadot/Wonder Woman
Development on “Wonder Woman 3” only recently stopped, so it’s pretty certain that Wonder Woman won’t continue, at least in the form originally planned. However Gunn revealed that he and Safran were there GalGadot have spoken and they are ready to perform in the DCU sei. Perhaps there is a possibility in the DCU Amazon series “Paradise Lost”?
Ezra Miller / The Flash
On the surface, Ezra Miller’s return to the DCU seems impossible, after all, the “The Flash” star is considered by many to be persona non grata in Hollywood due to numerous scandals and missteps. However, Miller promised to get better and is on the right track according to Gunn and Safran.
The DC bosses So not only do they leave the door wide open for a possible DCU comeback from Miller, Gunn also praises.”the flashemphatically in the highest tones: The movie is “damn awesome” and “one of the best superhero movies I’ve ever seen”. Whether there is any truth to the DC duo’s statements or whether they were just used for marketing purposes will likely be revealed after “The Flash” (German cinema release: June 15, 2023).
Zachary Levi/Shazam
“Shazam 2: Fury Of The Gods” is the first DCEU movie of 2023 (German cinema release: March 16, 2023) and the title character According to Gunn and Safran, Aquaman and The Flash could potentially become part of the DCU. In this case, however, we have our doubts whether this will work logistically:
Because a “Shazam 3” probably can’t be shot for another few years, because the DC release calendar is packed for now. Asher Angel, who currently plays teen Billy Batson, is now 20 years old. By 2026 or 2027, he would certainly be old enough to pass as an adult Shazam himself, along with the rest of the teens and young adults in the cast. And Shazam actor Zachary Levi would be nearly 50 by then. So maybe it’s time for a generation change here…
Xolo Maridueña / Blue Beetle
Of all the characters listed here, Blue Beetle (Xolo Maridueña) is probably the most likely to continue playing a role in the DCU, after all, the new superhero didn’t celebrate his debut until 2023 and Gunn describes “Blue beetle‘ as ‘completely detached’ from the DCEU.
So if Xolo Maridueña captures fans’ hearts as Jaime Reyes and “Blue Beetle” doesn’t quite go down at the box office, there’s nothing to be said against the character appearing in the DCU. Especially since there will also be a “Booster Gold” series here – and the two characters are also closely linked in the comics (though actually a different version of Blue Beetle)…
