Almost like “Batgirl”: star-studded series canceled for broadcast – even though it was already over!

The shock was big when it was announced that the DC action movie “Batgirl”, which was almost completely wrapped up and in the starting blocks, will never see the light of day. The streaming industry is changing and it doesn’t necessarily take cast and crew into account, but also the fans. But not only Warner is affected by such austerity measures. The entire streaming and broadcasting landscape is turned upside down, as the latest news shows.

As numerous trade journals unanimously report, the American premium channel Showtime is being combined with the streaming service Paramount+. At first glance, this may not seem like a big change since Showtime is owned by the same company, Paramount. However, a lot will change for the users of the channel and the streaming platform in the US – and of course some series will also fall victim to this new combination. Series fans in Germany could therefore be affected.

Showtime becomes Paramount+ with Showtime

Both the Showtime cable channel and the streaming service will be called “Paramount+ with Showtime” in the future. The content produced will then be broadcast on US linear television and will be made available for online streaming on Paramount+. That’s the less bad news…

However, some series formats suffer from this innovation. Thus is the eight-part production “So dark the nightcanceled after just one season. The series, which is based on a bestseller and a 2008 film of the same name and its remake, had not even made it to Germany. Whether we’re going to see them now remains to be seen. Also canceled after one season: “American gigolowith Marvel star John Bernthal (“The Punisher”) starring.

Both series are now disappearing from Showtime’s online offerings, as are a handful of other rather short-lived and not very successful series (including “Kidding” with Jim Carrey). Some, if not all, need to be searched for a new home.

“Three Women” featuring Shailene Woodley will not be shown

Even sadder than ending a series after season 1 is to bury a format before it even airs. In the case of Batgirl, we’ve already seen how quickly a project can be shut down, even if it’s completely finished (and should be good!). With the Showtime series “Three Women“It could go the same way. At least it won’t air on Paramount+ with Showtime, like and Co report.

Unfortunately, “Three Women” actually sounds pretty exciting. It’s not just a stellar cast that includes Fate is a Wicked Betrayer star Shailene Woodley, Betty Gilpin (“GLOW”) and Dewanda Wise (“Jurassic Word 3”). It is an adaptation of Lisa Taddeo’s bestseller Three Women, which is about how and if #MeToo has changed the world, among other things.

“Three Women” follows the story of Lina (Gilpin), Maggie (Gabrielle Creevy) and Sloane (Wise) as they discuss their roles in patriarchal society, their love lives and various forms of abuse.

Lina misses her husband’s physical closeness in her long-term relationship, Maggie realizes she’s been sexually exploited more or less her whole life, and Sloane sleeps with other men because her own husband approves and likes to watch. The three different women don’t want to go on like this and start to change their lives.

“Three Women” won’t be on Showtime, it will be loud there is hope that the series will not disappear completely into thin air. So the project can be bought and broadcast by another broadcaster or streaming platform. We will keep you informed.
