Netflix towers far above Prime Video & Co: these are the most watched streaming series & movies in 2022 in the US

The new year is almost a month old, but the look back at the film and series year 2022 is not over yet. After Netflix itself announced what the most successful films and series of the past year were, there is now an independent evaluation. And as service provider Nielsen, which specializes in U.S. streaming ratings and ratings, reports, Netflix has clearly put streaming rivals Disney+ and Amazon Prime Video in their place — at least in the series.

The most watched series in 2022 says: “Weird stuffat the top with 52 billion minutes streamedFollowed at some distance by the Netflix series “Ozark” (31.3 billion minutes) and the mega hit “Wednesday” (18.6 billion minutes), which only started at the end of November. The first non-Netflix title is number 11 (!): “the boys‘ with (10.6 billion minutes). Amazon’s super expensive The Rings of Power series comes in at number 15 with 9.4 billion minutes.

Nielsen figures are for the US only and are calculated based on a certain number of participating US households with television sets (mobile devices and computers are expressly excluded). Yet it follows an interesting picture that underscores Netflix’s continued supremacy, especially in the series sector. Not only is Netflix almost synonymous with streaming, but it’s also one of the few streaming services (if not the only one) that doesn’t consume more money than it brings in.

When it comes to movies, Disney+ is way ahead

When streaming however, according to Nielsen, Disney+ is not at the top in the US: The animated movie “Encanto” was streamed for 27.4 billion minutes, followed by “Rot” with 11.4 billion minutes. In third place is “Sing 2”, which is not (yet?) available on Netflix in Germany, but at WOW (formerly Sky Ticket)*. The most-watched Netflix original movie is The Adam Project at 6.1 billion minutes.
