The crime thriller “Knives Out – Mord ist Familiensache”, which was released in cinemas in early 2020, was followed a few weeks ago by its sequel – first in cinemas for a short time, then on Netflix. The title of Benoit Blanc’s new adventure: “Glass Onion”. But to make a connection to the first film, the puzzle fun was subtitled “A Knives Out Mystery”.
So the planned third part of the series will now also be a “Knives Out Mystery”? If it were up to Rian Johnson, screenwriter and director of the hit franchise, it wouldn’t be –Johnson would like a different subtitle for his film series in the future, if it comes: “A Benoit Blanc Mystery”.
“Knives Out” would then no longer appear in the title and that makes sense: after all, it is the detective Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) that the series revolves around – “Knives Out” was only the title of the first film.
Rian Johnson wants to get rid of “Knives Out”.
in the Rian Johnson spoke about the fact that he totally understand that Netflix Wanted to put “Knives Out” in the title of “Glass Onion”: “It’s not like they did it against my will or anything. I totally get it. Because after the first movie people probably realized they liked Knives Out, but maybe they didn’t know the movie well enough to know who Benoit Blanc is. […] And I wanted everyone who loved Knives Out to know that Glass Onion is the next one of those movies.”
So he agreed 100 percent with the title decision for “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery,” but admits: “It’s driving me a little crazy too and I want to see how quickly we can get rid of that subtitle.”
“A Benoit Blanc Mystery” – already part 3?
His suggestion, if an overarching franchise title is absolutely necessary, is “A Benoit Blanc Mystery” – and he is convinced that after the great success of “Glass Onion” on Netflix, the public is now starting to know who Benoit Blanc is. So it is quite possible that the third film – usually called “Knives Out 3” for lack of a better title – will already have the new subtitle.
Incidentally, the third Benoit Blanc film is already being made and will not only have its own title – there will certainly be one, just as part 1 is called “Knives Out” and part 2 “Glass Onion”, subtitles aside – but also differ from its predecessors in tone and setting.
