The title of the article already suggests it, but we still want to have one just to be sure explicit spoiler warning for “Avatar 2: The way of the water“ to pronounce. We’ll dive into some substantive details of the sci-fi fantasy blockbuster below, including a sequence at the very end of the film. So if you haven’t been to the cinema for the second Pandora adventure yet, but still have the sequel “Avatar” on your watch list… you’ve been warned!
“Avatar 2” follows in the massive footsteps of its predecessor, in more ways than one. In this way he lures the cinema audience into the film theaters of the world with a spectacular stream of images that have never been seen on a screen before. He also belongs to the exclusive circle of movies that have grossed over $2 billion at the box office. And there is one more thing in common with the first film: As in “Avatar – Leave for Pandora“ Also in “The Way Of Water” some elements are reminiscent of a cinema classic…
After Pocahontas comes Nausicaä
Artists use art, it always has been. The best example of this is cult director Quentin Tarantino, whose films are often celebrated as unique and original. And they are – but only because the directorial genius mixes inspiration from several other films (which are often so niche and unknown that hardly anyone has them on screen) to create his own cocktail.
James Cameron was accused after ‘Avatar’ of simply telling the story of ‘Pocahontas“retelling (or “Dances With Wolves” or “The Last Samurai” or…). And the filmmaker makes no secret of it, even referring to Neytiri, played by Zoe Saldana, as “his Pocahontas”. Nevertheless, he eventually turns it into his own story – now with part 2, which is very reminiscent of another cartoon classic.
In “The Way Of Water” memories of “Nausicaä of the Valley of the Windby Hayao Miyazaki awake (warning, there will be spoilers for the movie!)as many users on social media notice. addresses the AMP battlesuits on Twitter, seeing a clear parallel with the Titans, feels “lots of Nausicaä vibes” in the new Cameron epic as well I especially like Avatar 2 when it becomes Nausicaä:
Good morning to all Avatar heads…our time has come. I have a feeling I’m going to enjoy this movie a lot.
Could it be legion AMP suits walking forward like Nausicaa’s God-Warriors… pic.twitter.com/GR3rwbrHef

Let’s say…
Man who only saw Nausicaä watch Avatar: The Way of Water: “Get a lot of Nausicaä vibes from this.” https://t.co/h61NDciQxP

my favorite part of avatar 2 (sorry to watch it!) is when it turns into nausicaa of the valley of the wind

Similar to “Princess Mononoke”, Miyazaki’s film is about the relationship between humans and nature. The ecological, civilization-critical message amounts to a call for more harmonious coexistence with our planet – as it is now almost 40 years later in “Avatar 2”. And not only that.
Anyone who has seen the 1984 anime classic, currently available on Netflix, should also note: Kiri is Nausicaä’s successor. The youth embodied by Sigourney Weaver connects a mysterious bond with nature, an intimate bond that Nausicaä also feels. That the latter eventually also becomes a kind of savior also fits like a glove – and also feeds the theory that Kiri may be a kind of Na’vi Jesus.
Among other things points out the pretty obvious parallels between the two on Twitter:
I live for the parallels between Kiri and Nausicaa. The first Avatar already had a strong influence from Nausicaa from the Valley of the Wind, but now we get the protagonist reflected in Kiri. pic.twitter.com/5F4BvXApgM

One of the biggest similarities from a visual point of view has to wait until the end of “Avatar 2”. – until one of the last moments of “The Way Of Water”:
After the tragic death of Jake and Neytiri’s son Neteyam (Jamie Flatters), he is buried traditionally – according to Metkayina customs. So in the water he is returned to Eywa, engulfed in the process by golden tendrils that might as well be the “tentacles” of the isopod-like Ohmu. Twitter user was pleased with the obvious allusion and compared scenes from both films here:
I really like nausicaa reference at Avatar the way of water tbh#AvatarTheWayOfWater pic.twitter.com/d8bgc9L5rk

And now? Of course, that doesn’t make “Avatar: The Way Of Water” any less worth seeing. But on the contrary: Anyone who has already seen the film and is now bursting with curiosity about how far the parallels with “Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind” go, just have a look on Netflix – and then you can just go back to the cinema, and maybe even see Pandora with slightly different eyes.
By the way, we can give an unconditional recommendation for Hayao Miyazaki’s anime. In fact, for us, the film ranks as one of the best fantasy films of all time – as one of six Miyazaki films to make our ultimate FILMSTARTS ranking:
