The South Korean Netflix original “Squid Game” is one of the most internationally successful series on the streaming service and was watched no less than 1.6 billion hours (!) in the first 28 days after publication. A sequel is of course already in preparation, but we are still a long way off. It is clear that Netflix would like to have more such successful horses in its stable. And what is the streamer looking for in 2023? Of course also in South Korea! And this year there are some pretty interesting things coming up – both movies and series.
We have already reported about the Korean series “The Glory”, which is still considered an insider tip in Germany, but has already conquered the rest of the world. Eight more episodes of the revenge thriller series will be released in March. Also on January 20, Jung_E: Warrior’s Memory, an epic sci-fi movie from Train To Busan director Sang-Ho Yeon, will premiere on January 20. Those are just two of the 34 new productions Netflix has secured and presented for release in 2023. In addition to films and series, the new additions also include documentaries, games and reality formats.
Will “Goodbye Earth” Be The New “Squid Game”?
A new “Squid Game” wouldn’t be bad for both Netflix and the streamer’s viewers. The Glory is already up and running for subscribers. But of course Netflix is always looking for similar scavengers. But what series could rival the dystopian game of life and death Squid Game is about?
“Goodbye Earthcan certainly keep up, at least in terms of dystopia and life-and-death struggles. After all, it’s about nothing less than the end of the world. Humans have 200 days left before an asteroid destroys all life. How should these last moments on Earth be spent? Do you fall into chaos and panic? Or should you just enjoy the last days on earth? We’ll know when Goodbye Earth hits Netflix in late 2023.
You should remember these new Netflix series from South Korea
There’s still plenty of time for other formats before the second season of “Squid Game” comes out in 2024. We already introduced you to ‘The Glory’ and ‘Goodbye Earth’, but Netflix has many more interesting series from South Korea in the program this year. We give you an overview:
In “Crash course in romance” is about Nam Heang-seon (Jeon Do-yeon), who actually wanted to become a successful handball player. But because she always cares more about others than about herself, she has given up on this dream. Now she works in her own supermarket. This is how she earns money, but she is always very close to her family. It also enables her to take better care of her husband, who has an eating disorder. However, when she meets the teacher Choi Chi-Yeol (Jung Kyoung-Ho), her orderly life takes a turn…
In addition to ‘Crash Course in Romance’, the drama series can also be heard “The good bad mother” very interesting. It tells the story of the mother Young Soon (Ra Mi Ran), who has focused her whole life on her son Kang Ho (Lee Do Hyun) and has always relied on strict upbringing. When Kang Ho, now a successful prosecutor, loses his memory in an accident, the two embark on a journey back to childhood and Young Soon must slip back into her mother role.
But of course, Netflix didn’t just buy rom-coms and dramas. Action formats are also planned for 2023: “Black knight” takes place in a completely destroyed world in the year 2071. People wear respirators because otherwise the polluted air would destroy their lungs. The population was severely decimated by environmental degradation and society was severely divided into new social classes. 5-8 (Kim Woo-bin) lives in this world and works as a delivery boy – he belongs to the elite in his town. When he meets the fugitive Sa-wol (Kang You-Seok), he decides to help him and takes him on a journey against the government’s dark forces.
Two Netflix films from South Korea that we will hear from in 2023
Starts in a few days “Jung_E: The warrior’s memory” on Netflix. The thriller takes us on a journey to the year 2194. People now live in shelters in space because the earth is no longer habitable due to climate change. But people do not find peace in space either. A civil war breaks out that lasts for many years. The soldier Yun Jung-yi (Kim Hyun-joo) becomes a celebrated war hero and is considered invincible. Everything changes when she is injured during surgery and falls into a coma. A company specializing in the development of artificial intelligence is trying to make a combat robot with its genetic code. But the experiment gets out of hand…
The thriller must also have hard action “Kill Boxing” deliver, which should also be available on Netflix in the spring. It is about Bok-Soon (Jeon Do-Yeon), who is not only a single mother, but also a hitman. She is considered a professional in her industry and cannot complain about a lack of work. But life as a respected assassin isn’t always easy. In addition to problems with her colleagues and her boss, she also has to live up to her role as a mother. When she refuses an order, she finds herself in the line of fire and now has to be careful not to die herself…
