“Avatar 2” succeeds as a cinema sensation: only 3 (!) other films in Germany have achieved this so far

Prior to its theatrical release, some pundits and observers believed that Avatar: The Way Of Water would flop, or at least not be particularly successful; The theatrical release of the first part was too long ago for them, the cultural reverberation of the film was too weak. But with the theatrical release, James Cameron put all doubters and critics in their place and broke with them “Avatar 2” set one record after another from the first second – and now the next record has been broken in Germany.

Because last weekend, no fewer than 740,000 cinema tickets were bought in Germany, worth 10.3 million euros. That is the best fifth weekend ever by sales (Theatrical release was December 16, 2022) or the third-best fifth weekend by ticket sales. That is a real house number, but not yet the real sensation:

“Avatar 2” is now only the fourth film ever to break the 100 million euro mark in Germany. “The Way Of Water” is already the fourth highest-grossing film of all time in this country – at least sorted by sales. Classically, ticket sales are actually counted in Germany, here “Avatar 2” is currently at 7.45 million and does not even make it into the top 50 (all figures come from the industry service ).

How high will “Avatar 2” climb?

But the second “Avatar” film is far from exhausted and should still be able to rack up some ticket sales in Germany in the coming weeks (and months?). So About two million euros are missing to catch up with “Star Wars 7: The Force Awakens”. Then James Cameron is the director of the three highest-grossing films of all time in Germany with “Titanic”, “Avatar” and “Avatar 2”.

However, “The Way Of Water” also broke a major milestone worldwide, grossing $1.901 billion. For the time being, however, the film has not taken up any spots in the list of the most successful films of all time. Spider-Man: No Way Home ($1.92 billion), Avengers: Infinity War ($2.05 billion) and Star Wars 7 ($2.07 billion) are still ahead of Avatar 2.” However, it’s probably only a matter of time before Jake Sully and Co. catch up with these titles as well.

So Hollywood’s statement that you should never bet against Cameron has been proven once again…
