Godzilla is the “king of the monsters”. There is no such thing. It has earned its reputation through a history that spans more than half a century. In more than thirty feature films, we have seen the lizard-like monster fight against humans and other monsters. Various political and stylistic upheavals can be seen in the films. The franchise, which originated in Japan, grew so large that it spawned American spin-offs, which many in this country should be more familiar with than the original Kaijū films. The MonsterVerse, which delighted audiences in 2021 with “Godzilla vs Kong” among others, recently provided the giant lizard’s big appearances.
But whether it’s the original Japanese kaijū movie or one of the American reboots, one thing remains the same: Godzilla is an enemy that isn’t easy to defeat. Countless monsters and great cities have fallen victim to his power and thermonuclear heat ray. It also happens that Godzilla has to compete against old acquaintances. Monsters like King Ghidorah, who was last seen in Godzilla 2: King of Monsters, have a long history and have appeared repeatedly in the film adaptations.
Godzilla is not invincible!
It’s underrated that Godzilla wouldn’t have won some of his battles without the support of other monsters. Regular guests of the universe such as Anguirus or Mothra helped him several times. Incidentally, Mothra was also the monster responsible for Godzilla’s first defeat. At the end of Godzilla and the Primeval World Caterpillars, Godzilla kills Mothra, but two offspring of the giant moth wrap their threads around him and fly away with him. In “Godzilla – Battle of the Dinosaur Giants” Mothra managed to win again. However, she couldn’t do it without the help of Battra, a butterfly-like kaijū monster.
Usually, however, Godzilla was defeated by Mechagodzilla, his mechanical twin brother. The most impressive victory came in Godzilla vs Kong in 2021, where Godzilla could only survive with Kong’s help. However, it was not the first defeat suffered by our favorite lizard. In 2002, Mechagodzilla was able to assert itself in “Godzilla against Mechagodzilla”. In this film, he was sent by the people to drive out the “King of the Monsters” – with success! Just a year later, they dueled again in Godzilla: Tokyo SOS. Once again, the winner was Mechagodzilla, if only thanks to Mothra’s help.

You see: even the king of monsters is not invincible. He often needs the help of other creatures. On rare occasions, he is even defeated in battle and has to admit defeat. Godzilla’s greatest fear would remain that of Mechagodzilla, who could defeat him three times. While we’re glad to see Godzilla’s enemies making it exciting, we’re also relieved to see the alfatitan return to the big screen unscathed.
