This American is the new “Miss Universe”

The 28-year-old R’Bonney Gabriel from the US has been named the new “Miss Universe”. In a live show in New Orleans, she beat 83 contestants late on Saturday night (local time), organizers said. Gabriel received the tiara from her predecessor’s winner, Harnaaz Sandhu (22) from India.

The Venezuelan Amanda Dudamel (23) and the Dominican Andreína Martínez (25) came second and third in the 71st edition of the beauty pageant. 19-year-old Alia Guindi competed for Switzerland. However, she was not among the 16 finalists.

A native of Houston, Texas, R’Bonney Gabriel has a bachelor’s degree in fashion design, according to organizers. The former high school volleyball player now has her own company and works with environmentally friendly and sustainable textiles. According to the organizers, she is the first “Miss Universe” from the US with Filipino roots. Her father is from the Southeast Asian island nation.

In the question and answer session, Gabriel said, among other things, that he wants to work on raising the age limit of the league, which is currently 28 years old. “As a woman, I don’t think age defines us,” she said. Her favorite motto is “if not now, then when?”. (sda/dpa)
