Those who liked the crime thriller surprise hit “Knives Out – Mord ist Familiensache” not only because of the exciting story, but also because of the dignified atmosphere and the retro look around a venerable villa, will be surprised by “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery “. have been: Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) ends up in sunny Greece at the state-of-the-art estate of a tech billionaire. And the sequel also differs from the first part tonally, is much more comical.
But what does director and screenwriter Rian Johnson have in store for us for “Knives Out 3”? The filmmaker revealed this in an interview with not exactly, of course, but Johnson revealed that he plans to do another 180 degree turn for Knives Out 3. And that he can take a new direction with each of his Benoit Blanc crime novels is exactly what appeals to him about the series:
“I’m just starting to work on the third movie and what I’m so excited about creatively is I don’t have to recreate the last movie at all. Because the goal is to devise a completely new direction both tonally and thematically.”
Agatha Christie as a great role model
As different as Rian Johnson’s “Knives Out” films may be, they all have one great role model in common: Agatha Christie. Johnson grew up reading the crime goddess novels and watching the film adaptations with his entire family. That was definitely entertaining – which is why his “Knives Out” movies had to be entertaining in the first place.
So Agatha Christie is the role model – but not the template! Because Johnson writes the stories for the “Knives Out” movies himself. “What was so exciting about ‘Glass Onion’ was I tried to emulate Christie with a whole new story,” says the filmmaker. However, a fresh approach is important to him: “Nostalgia is the enemy. It’s the opposite of what I always try to achieve: something alive and smart that feels present.”
“Knives Out 3”: new murder case, new setting
So we’re really excited to see what researcher Benoit Blanc has in store for the third installment in the series, which also returns to Netflix. A trip to a polar station? A murder case in a casino? Research in a monastery? Anything is possible – but it’ll be a while before we see it on Netflix. With Johnson just starting work on Knives Out 3, we don’t expect it to launch until 2024.
But we are already certain: there will be a lot of stars in the leading roles and guest appearances in “Knives Out 3”. You can read more about the great cameos in Glass Onion in the following article:
