“The Big Bang Theory” is a serial cult. The sitcom ran very successfully on the American channel CBS between 2007 and 2019 and had a total of 12 seasons – in Germany the series was broadcast on Pro 7, where the nerds are still a long-running hit and guaranteed viewing figures for more than three years after the end of the series.
Besides the crazy mundane adventures of the nerd gang, the series has always been about who gets together with whom – the quintessential sitcom question. Sure, there have been a few romances between the characters over the years, but not all of them have been well received by audiences. series producer Steve Molaro revealed which love affair was not well received by the fans:
In particular, the liaison between Ober-Nerd Leonard (Johnny Galecki) and Raj’s sister Priya (Art man) was clearly a thorn in the side of the fans. Of course, it was planned from the start that Penny and Leonard would eventually find each other again, but the grumpy scientist also had a very serious relationship with Priya, which also played out in some episodes of the series – despite the reluctance of Priya’s brother Raj. Only the circumstance of a long-distance relationship can put an end to love happiness.
There were no long-term plans for the character
In Jessica Radloff’s novel The Big Bang Theory: The Definitive Inside Story Of The Epic Hit Series, the producer now refers to Priya as THE series’ polarizing partner:
“Uh, that’s a polarizing figure. I wish I could tell you that we thought about these things in advance, but we didn’t. It seemed like an entertaining storyline that Leonard was dating Raj’s sister. That was the whole thinking behind it. It was never like, ‘Oh, if Leonard dates Raj’s sister, we’ll do episode X and then Y will happen!’ That’s not how we did it. We were just desperate for the next episode and that’s about it. And if something came out of that, fine.”
