“Wednesday” Won’t Go Away From Netflix: Is Season 2 Announcement Imminent?

TO UPDATE from January 6, 6:30 p.m.: That was quick. Netflix just teased us, now the confirmation is here. Wednesday‘ is being renewed for a second season – and will of course also be back on Netflix.

The original message: In a sense, the concern is understandable. As Netflix has sold countless series in recent weeks and months, including very popular series like “1899”, many fans of “Wednesday” are worried about their new favorite series. Then it seems strange that Netflix hasn’t renewed the megahit yet, even though the series is breaking one record after another. And just this week, those concerns were reignited.

Namely, on January 2, 2023, the British newspaper published an article with the misleading headline “Wednesday season 2 may not air on Netflix” – a claim that was barely substantiated in the article itself. Significantly, the said independent article can no longer be found at all. Instead, there’s an article titled “Wednesday Season 2 Not Leaving Netflix Despite MGM Deal With Amazon”. Apparently the newspaper has now published a correction.

Exactly this MGM deal – Amazon acquired the MGM movie studio and is now the de facto producer of “Wednesday” – is responsible for all the confusion, by the way. However, as we explained in a mid-December 2022 article, the deal is no big deal and nothing new in Hollywood. For example, the Netflix series “The Sandman” is also produced by Warner Bros. Television, so by a competitor. And from MGM there are also “Vikings: Valhalla” (also running on Netflix), “Fargo” (running on FX) and “The Handmaid’s Tale” (running on Hulu).

Long story short, any worries about moving from “Wednesday” to Prime Video or not getting a second season at all due to competition between Amazon and Netflix are most likely unnecessary.

But what about season 2?

The major American trade magazines such as Some. Bee can also be read that the “inevitable” announcement of the second season should be made “Wednesday” in early 2023 – and Netflix has now rekindled this assumption:

A scene from the season 1 finale of “Wednesday” was posted on the streaming service’s official Twitter channel, in which the character played by Jenna Ortega “The End?” types on her typewriter. A few question marks were added to Netflix’s Twitter channel – which is of course so easy to understand that a sequel is being hinted at here.

However, we would like to state at this point that this is not yet a confirmation of a second season. In view of all this, we wouldn’t be surprised if “Wednesday” Season 2 is finally and officially announced in the next few days…
