Mega Mindfuck new on Netflix this week – and besides one of the craziest series of the year, there’s a lot more…

Our traditional preview of Netflix’s potential highlights this time is a three-day preview midway through this week. Because Netflix hasn’t really announced anything exciting for the start of the week or for the weekend, and as always, we’re only showcasing selected new releases that we think will be of particular interest to you.

But there is still plenty of program, because the promising titles are piling up over the three days. Before we start with the Netflix Highlights January 2-8, 2023 start, nor the well-known comment: This preview is based on Netflix’s announcements at the time of publication. In rare cases, changes can occur at very short notice.

Monday & Tuesday: The calm before the storm

As mentioned, there are no new top acts at the beginning of the week, so there is still time to work through your entire watch list.

Wednesday: Lots of Hollywood fare – especially for Action & Thrill fans

It really goes wild on Wednesday this week. On January 4, Netflix will launch more than a dozen new licensed titles on its platform, among other things. Action fans really get their money’s worth. In addition to “Anna”, you can also stream Luc Besson’s celebrated masterpiece “Léon – Der Profi”. Even more excitement comes with “Sicario” by “Dune” director Denis Villeneuve and the sequel “Sicario 2” by Stefano Sollima, which is also worth checking out.

Among the numerous German films available on Netflix from Wednesday, the skinhead drama ‘Oi! Warning.” And because these are all titles aimed at adults, we also have a movie that you can watch with the whole family: the 2020 remake of the fantasy novel classic “The Secret Garden” has some narrative weaknesses, but visually convincing and so worth seeing Unfortunately, the film adaptation from 1993 was only removed from the program around the turn of the year, so you can no longer make a direct comparison.

Thursday: Nicolas Winding Refn’s mega mindfuck finally begins

Drive director Nicolas Winding Refn has already had a big hit with his Amazon Prime video series Too Old To Die Young, now he does really great work at Netflix:”Copenhagen cowboy. We don’t want to give too much away about what happens in the series about a young, repeatedly tormented woman with alleged supernatural abilities. Because what happens takes a few twists and turns and is always upside down. Anyone who thinks that everything is still quite sober after the first three episodes will wonder what the hell that was after the last sixth episode. This is staged by Nicolas Winding Refn in large cinematic images, as you would expect from him…

We don’t want to reveal much more at this point because If you want to know more about “Copenhagen Cowboy”, there is also FILMSTARTS editor-in-chief Christoph Petersen’s detailed report entitled “Copenhagen Cowboy” on the “mega mindfuck”: ‘The craziest Netflix series of the year is also one of the best’.

It’s not the only high-profile Thursday series reboot, by the way. Although “Ginny & Georgia” got into a bit of a shit storm after pop superstar Taylor Swift slammed the show criticizing a sexist joke directed at her, it’s still getting a second season.

Meanwhile, it’s getting much darker in “dead woman“. In the thriller series, Anna Maria Mühe plays the undertaker Brünhilde Blum, whose world collapses after her husband, who works as a police officer, is hit by a car. But she soon finds clues in his old files that make her question the police theory of the accident. She wants not only answers, but much more: ruthless revenge!

Friday: Christian Bale on the hunt for killers

As is regularly the case on Netflix, Friday is the day of the week’s biggest original movie launch. In The Memorable Case of Mr. Poe plays Christian Bale, star of The Dark Knight, a detective sent to investigate a gruesome murder at an 1830s military academy. In doing so, he meets the later bestselling author Edgar Allan Poe (Harry Melling), who is still a young cadet here and already shows a great fondness for all things morbid…

We’ve already seen and reviewed the third collaboration between director Scott Cooper and Christian Bale after “An Eye for an Eye” and “Enemies – Hostiles” on the occasion of its early theatrical release. However, despite the top-notch staff, we’re not convinced by the latest Netflix original movie. Our 2.5-star review states that “Scott Cooper’s screen adaptation of the novel convinces with a dense, chilling atmosphere, but the lengthy and frayed Edgar Allan Poe-lending crime plot is little memorable, as the title promises.”

Saturday & Sunday: The calm after the storm

There will be no further reports before the weekend, but something from the previous titles should have ended up on your watch list. And if you’re already done with Copenhagen Cowboy, you can also use the weekend to just think about what’s going on in Nicolas Winding Refn’s Mindfuck.
