It should come as no surprise that the origins of Sigourney Weaver’s Na’vi teen Kiri will become very, very important after the events of Avatar 2: The Way Of Water. Or Dr. Grace Augustine (also Sigourney Weaver) received her as part of an Immaculate Conception by the Goddess Eywa, so Kiri is sort of a Na’vi Jesus character, will be a big topic in “Avatar 3” and maybe the other sequels . But not all of the movie’s mysteries are as clear cut as this one. Another is much better hidden…
It is repeatedly pointed out in dialogues that Kiri and Jakes (Sam Worthington) and Neytiris (Zoe Saldana) son Lo’ak (Great Britain Dalton) have five fingers – as is the case with people and avatars instead of the four fingers that are actually common in Na’vi. The two are mocked by the Metkayina teens around Ao’nung (Filip Geljo) and insulted as “freaks”. But not all children have five fingers on each hand.
Why do Neteam and Took only have four fingers?
Unlike Kiri and Lo’ak take the little tuk (Trinity Jo-Li Bliss) and eldest brother Neteya (Jamie flatters) only four fingers on each hand, as is customary for Na’vi. This is never mentioned in the film, but if you look closely you will see it several times. What is the reason for that?

Of course, it can have a very simple background. Possibly the Na’vi genes have been more predominant in the two. But did James Cameron really just put that in there? So why isn’t it mentioned in the many dialogues about fingers? After all, there is so much talk about the five fingers of the rest. Is there perhaps a lot more that Cameron isn’t ready to poke at to surprise us with?
SPOILER warning: a possible Neteya theory
The fingers could indicate that Neteam and Took are not Jake’s children at all. Was Neytiri still in a secret relationship with another man? Does he suddenly appear on the scene to bring those responsible for his son’s death to justice?
It is already known that “Harry Potter” star David Thewlis joins the cast of Avatar 3 and will play a very important role, which also extends to “Avatar 4” and “Avatar 5” when they are created. And Thewlis has already confirmed that he plays a Na’vi. Is he perhaps Neteya’s real father?
Such a turn can also bring great potential for conflict in Jake and Neytiri’s relationship. It would also be a theme that would fit James Cameron’s work. The director always has fragile and/or unusual family constellations that have to come together despite adversity.
Our theory: not the 4 is important, but the 5
In any case, the internet forum Reddit is busy puzzling over what James Cameron wants to tell us by saying that two of the children only have four fingers. However, we suspect that expecting a major paternity twist or reveal might be reading too much into the finer details. The fact that James Camerons never addresses Neteyam and Tuk’s regular four fingers, but continuously addresses Kiri and Lo’ak’s five fingers, has more to do with how important these details are.
He wants to point to the five fingers. For both, it underlines their eccentric status. In Kiri’s case, it is another clue that there is no Na’vi father, but that she was simply born in Grace Augustine’s womb. And Lo’ak visualizes why he doesn’t feel like he belongs. He feels misunderstood by his father, has no contact with other children and therefore always risks too much to prove something. The fact that he then finds a friend in a tulkun fits perfectly into the picture. Not coincidentally, Cameron repeatedly shows us both Kiri and Lo’ak alone, not in groups.
In a year or two, we’ll probably know if Neteya’s four fingers still play a part, contrary to our assumptions, or if it’s really just a minor detail that won’t be elaborated upon. “avatar 3is scheduled to hit theaters on December 18, 2024. “Avatar 2: The Way Of Water” is still running there and just hit a major milestone.
