The most beautiful events at the beginning of the year in the mountains

The old year is coming to an end and Christmas is approaching. It’s time to start making plans for the New Year! Instead of starting the new year at parties, dance balls, or within your own four walls, there are events in the mountains too. In the middle of nature, the turn of the year turns into an unforgettable experience where people travel up close and far.

Whether it’s winter sports, music, or just chatting in the mountains, these events in the mountains will take place on December 31st and will be a lot of fun:

New Year’s Eve Party Prodalp, Flums SG

As the name suggests, the New Year’s Eve party at Prodalp in Flumserberg is celebrated throughout the day: local band “TryOut” plays live music, inviting you to dance and rock together. Depending on the weather conditions, it will be decided whether the party will be held on the sun terrace or at the Prodalp mountain restaurant.

Admission to the concert, which will take place between 13:00 and 16:00, is free.

New Year’s Eve toboggan Hospental UR

An eventful end of the year is guaranteed with New Year’s Eve sledding at Hospental UR. Evening sled rental and bar service begins. Besides having fun on the toboggan run down Dorfstrasse in Hospental, the event includes fireworks and free trophies at Dorfbrücke.

Sledge rental and bar service from 20:00. There is a free bus service for New Year’s Eve.

Mountain bike race on snow at Villars-sur-Ollon VD

Ending the year can’t be more adrenaline-fuelled: at the Grand Prix de St-Sylvestre you glide down the slopes of the Roc d’Orsay to Villars VD. Considered the oldest mountain bike race on snow, it has been held on 31 December for 33 years. Cycling enthusiasts from near and far participate.

Registration is required to participate and can be done online or on site.
Online registration between 22-30 December: 30 CHF.
On-site registration fee: 45 CHF.

Christmas sledding, Samnaun GR

Toboggan talk will take place in Samnaun in the canton of Graubünden on 31 December. The meeting point is the Votlas Samnaun Dorf car park. From there, you hike together for three-quarters of an hour through the snow-covered forest to a forester’s cabin. New Year’s Eve is celebrated with campfires, mulled wine and good conversations, and fireworks are set at midnight. The sled then takes you into the valley. To attend, you must pre-register at the Samnaun Guest Information Office by 17:00 on December 30.

You will meet at the Votlas Samnaun Dorf parking lot at 22:30. Participation is free and the event will last approximately three hours. You must bring your own sled.

Goitasingen Bergün/Bravuogn GR

Christmas crackers are not used at Bergün/Brauvuogn GR, but instead it is traditionally sung here on 31 December. Locals and guests sing Romanesque and German New Year’s songs by lanternlight at various locations. The procession ends in the village square shortly before midnight. It’s a tradition to thoughtfully celebrate the turn of the year. A New Year’s Eve surrounded by songs and mountain scenery doesn’t get any more idyllic.

Goitasing starts at 22:00 after the service at Bergün Evangelical Church. Participation is free.

Christmas night ski, Splügen GR

In the Splügen-Tambo ski area, the slopes are illuminated on New Year’s Eve for skiing, snowboarding or tobogganing. The ideal way to end the year for all winter sports enthusiasts who can’t get enough of the snow even at night.

The event will take place between 19:00 – 22:00. Special evening rates apply.
