Just like in 2021 and 2020, we have determined the ultimate best list for the movie highlights of 2022 together with the Moviepilot colleagues. Because With the accumulated expertise of the editors of two of Germany’s largest movie sites, we have been able to create a ranking that goes far beyond individual best lists.
It is precisely everyone’s personal top lists that form the basis for an election in which ultimately Hollywood blockbusters such as ‘The Batman’ or ‘Top Gun 2: Maverick’ are very far ahead. But in the end, all films are clearly beaten by a highlight that is represented in more than half of all individual lists in one of the top positions.
Cinema beats Netflix and Co.
Also interesting: the cinema films clearly outperformed the streaming releases. The top 10 almost exclusively contains titles that ran exclusively in cinemas for a longer period of time. The occasional Netflix original film (which also hit theaters first) and an Indian blockbuster spectacle, which many probably only discovered after a short time in cinemas on Netflix, are exceptions.
But enough preamble: Here are the 25 best films of 2022. From 25th to 12th place (no mistakes) in a compact list, for the top 10 with a short explanation.
Place 25 – 13
25. “Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio” & “X”
24. Verse
23. “After Sun”
22. “Athena”
21. “Red”
20. “What do we see when we look at the sky?”
19. “Triangle of Sorrow”
18. “Beyond the Infinite Two Minutes”
17. “The Northman”
16. “Memory”
15. “The Card Counter”
14. “The Menu”
13. “Blonde”
12. “Scream”
10th Place: “Spencer” & “The Innocents”
Why is there no title at number 11? Because a duo has gathered in 10th place. Although “The Innocents” and “Spencer” are very different movies, they end up exactly on the same page at the end of our ranking.
FILMSTARTS editor Nina Becker even puts ‘Spencer’ at number 1 in her personal annual ranking and is convinced: ‘Just like Kristen Stewart plays the British princess and sweet mother Diana in the biopic of Pablo Larraín, I don’t want to forget it. hair.”

“The Innocents” is one of the few movies that even got the highest rating of 5 stars from us this year. “Ruthlessly bad and at the same time mercilessly good,” writes lead critic Christoph Petersen in his review.

9th Place: “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery”
“Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery” is the sequel to “Knives Out”, which even took third place in our 2020 grand standings. The sequel doesn’t go up that far. The only Netflix original in the top 10, which doesn’t top any individual list but has numerous entries, is available to stream on Netflix with the release of this special on December 23. We have a clear recommendation: “Crime that’s mostly fun,” says our FILMSTARTS review.

8th place: “The worst person in the world”
Just ahead of the Netflix sequel, one of the year’s art house hits ranks eighth: “The Worst Man in the World” is a refreshingly different relationship movie that tops FILMSTARTS author Oliver Kube’s personal list. Not only did he rave about “the most likable, most humane movie character I’ve met in recent years.”

7th Place: “RRR”
2022 was also the year of Indian cinema. Not only in Germany, more Indian films were shown on the big screen than probably ever before – right up front: SS Rajamouli’s wild and spectacular action highlight “RRR”, which started a triumphant march around the world. Unfortunately, after only a very short theatrical run, the surprisingly timely release on Netflix also played a part in the epic being widely seen and thus found in numerous of the best lists submitted for this ranking. Fully deserved for FILMSTARTS editor Björn Becher. The author of these lines even has “RRR” at the top of his personal list, enjoyed the spectacular blockbuster both in a packed cinema celebrating every scene and again on Netflix and can only repeat his old recommendation: watch “RRR”!

6th Place: “Bones and Everything”
The romance ‘Bones And All’ stars superstar Timothée Chalamet and discovery Taylor Russell as a cannibal love couple making their way through a desolate 1980s America. The result is, on the one hand, a touching, fantastic-looking film with plenty of pitch-black humor and some bloody excess, which led Moviepilot editor-in-chief Lisa Ludwig to enthusiastically rave about the “first love movie for which you need a puke bag”. Our rank 6!
» “Bones And All” runs exclusively in cinemas
5th Place: “Licorice Pizza”
The top 5 starts with a movie from 2021, which only started in Germany in January 2022 and is therefore considered by us for this list. Paul Thomas Anderson’s “Licorice Pizza” developed an almost inordinate lightness that inspired countless editors* on both sides, so many proclaimed it one of their ten best films of the year that this excellent placement has been recorded overall.

4th Place: “Top Gun: Maverick”
It’s the global cinema hit of 2022 (even if “Minions 2” was just ahead in Germany and “Avatar 2” will still overtake it in the final reckoning) and not only popular, but damn good. We are talking about “Top Gun 2: Maverick”. Moviepilot editor Jan-Felix Wuttig even puts the action spectacle with Tom Cruise at the top of his personal list. After all, the Top Gun sequel is just “everything between incredibly fast-paced and deeply moving.”

3rd Place: “The Batman”
The DC comics adaptation “The Batman” opened the stage just ahead of “Top Gun: Maverick” and even closer behind the second-placed title. Nearly a dozen top 10 lists have featured Matt Reeves and Robert Pattinson’s reinvention of The Dark Knight in part because it’s “a different kind of Batman movie that subverts the hero’s image as a sinister avenger while still retaining some of the best superhero moments of the year (keyword: Batmobile!)”, says FILMSTARTS editor and DC expert Julius Vietzen about his personal top film of the year.

2nd Place: “No”
As the author of these lines reviewed his peers’ lists, he watched with excitement as the rankings behind first place kept changing. And gradually a science fiction film crept forward that didn’t seem to play such a big role at first. But the top 2 placement of “Nope” is perhaps surprising, but certainly not undeserved. Because Jordan Peele’s unusual highlight can’t just be found on countless individual lists, but very often way above that. Such is also the case with Moviepilot editor Hendrik Ruben Busch, who perfectly summarizes the exceptional character of his personal number 1: “An enigmatic, funny, visually impressive blockbuster singularity!”

1st Place: “Everything Everywhere All at Once”
In contrast, what comes out on top was clear early on in the evaluation: By a clear margin, the two teams of Moviepilot and FILMSTARTS opt for “Everything everywhere at oncefor best movie of 2022 and we remain excited about it.
YouTube editor Sebastian Gerdshikow speaks of a “deliciously chaotic, creative overload”, Max Wieseler of the Moviepilot editors of an “overwhelming sensory overload of images and ideas” that “besides all the wonderfully crazy ideas, brilliant action and cinematic ideas, there is also a history that touches the heart,” adds his colleague Esther Stroh. Or as FILMSTARTS editor Annemarie Havran summarizes it: “You have to come up with something crazy first! I never thought I would want to spend more than two hours in a tax office.”

Of course, we chose not only the best films of the year, but also the best series of 2022. There, the latest titles from two major franchises fought a very exciting race, while a not-so-secret insider tip took third place on Disney+. You’ll soon find out what’s behind it. The list of the best series of 2022 will be released in a week – on December 30, 2022.
