What’s good for scratched sweaters?

With a sweater you will always dress well in autumn and winter. From comfortable oversized models to classic twin sets, there’s something for every taste. This garment also keeps you nice and warm when it gets cold outside. It is therefore not surprising that wool sweaters are very popular with both men and women and never go out of style.
But what to do if the top is scratchy? The coarser and untreated the wool, the more likely it is to cause itching on the skin. Before leaving such clothes to gather dust in the closet, you should try the following tips for more wearing comfort.

wool cycle

It is better to use the machine’s wool program for coarse sweaters, although hand washing is usually gentler. It is best to use a special detergent for wool, which takes care of the fibers and makes them supple. This makes the material softer and fluffy after cleaning. Therefore, an additional fabric softener is not necessary and in the worst case, it can even cause clothes to stretch.

Dip in conditioner

Since it is wool (sheep) hair, sweaters that still cause itching when worn despite the wool washing program can also be soaked with conditioner. Put some of the conditioner in a bowl of warm water and let the top soak in a few minutes. Then rinse carefully with water. But if you make it too coarse, you risk losing the shape of the garment.

Lanolin bath

A lanolin bath, also known as wool wax, can do wonders for extremely uncomfortable woolen garments. You can buy waterless wool wax from the pharmacy for the bathroom, for example, add a teaspoon of dishwashing liquid to half a liter of boiling water. Everything must be thoroughly mixed, and then cooled to almost 30 degrees. Then you put the wool sweater in a large container, for example a bucket, and pour the milky liquid on it. If necessary, add some warm water so that the entire sweater remains in the water.
After about an hour, the sweater can be removed from the bath and wrapped in a towel and wrung out. To protect the wool, let the garment dry flat. The top should be more comfortable the next time you wear it, otherwise you can repeat this process.

put it in the freezer

It sounds incredible, but it’s proven: Putting a wool sweater in a plastic bag in the freezer overnight will make it less itchy. The cold also helps popular fall and winter clothes lose less fiber.

Wear a turtleneck shirt underneath

If nothing helps, and the wool feels too coarse and uncomfortable, there’s one last trick that works 100 percent: wear a turtleneck shirt under an itchy sweater. This not only looks stylish when you coordinate the outfit well, but it also keeps you twice as warm. So that the cold seasons cannot harm you.
