A relaxing trip to South Tyrol

The journey is magical. The route goes to Italy via the Flüela Pass, via Graubünden. Snow-covered roads, picturesque landscapes and a feeling of emptiness and freedom mark the beginning of a South Tyrol journey. The Italian province, where the majority of the population speaks German, turns into a paradise for skiing and relaxing in the cold season. In less than two hours you can reach the capital Bolzano. Or Bolzano, as the town of 100,000 inhabitants is called in Italian.

The Alpine town impresses with its Alpine charm and, of course, friendly residents who switch from German to Italian. A vin brulee or mulled wine is available almost everywhere at New Year’s time. But above all on Waltherplatz in the city centre. The Bolzano Christmas market is centered around the monument to Walther Von der Vogelweide, one of the most important German poets of the Middle Ages. It smells of anise and there are bagels on almost every counter. Taverns in the side streets invite you to linger. The alpine town combines Bavarian elegance with Italian lifestyle.

After a long walk through the streets of Bozen, the journey takes you 20 minutes further south to Lake Caldaro. Here, in the middle of the vineyards, there are hotels that invite visitors to linger. If you want to get away from the stress of daily life for a few days and have a good time, this is the place for you. However, if you are looking for wild nightlife and exciting experiences, you will be disappointed. In South Tyrol, although there is ski tourism and apre-skiing, the area around Lake Caldaro is mostly used for recreation.

For the return trip to Switzerland, the Brenner Pass is an alternative to the picturesque Flüela Pass. This is risk-free, because this path is absolutely unobstructed and at the same time quite exciting. Because when do you cross four countries with Italy, Austria, Liechtenstein and Switzerland in four hours?
