A new Miyazaki is coming to the cinema!

Hayao Miyazaki had actually already announced his retirement in 2013, but after his supposedly last film “As the Wind Rises”, the filmmaker was still working on the short film “Boro The Caterpillar”, which was shown at the Ghibli Museum in Japan since May 21 March 2018. And Miyazaki seems to have come out of retirement again – we can already expect a new feature film from the master director in the cinemas next year!

This will be titled “Kimi-tachi wa Do Ikiru ka” (English title: “How Do You Live”) will be released in Japanese cinemas on July 14, 2023. How Do You Live is based on the 1937 children’s book of the same name by Japanese writer Genzaburo Yoshino, which Hayao Miyazaki has repeatedly cited as one of his favorite books. The director already announced in 2017 that he wanted to make a film of the book.

The book tells the story of 15-year-old Junichi Honda, whom everyone just calls Koperu. With the help of his uncle, whose advice he takes from a diary, the boy embarks on a journey of meaning in life and spiritual enlightenment.

It is currently uncertain when Hayao Miyazaki’s last film will be released in Germany. However, we’re hoping for a release close to its Japanese cinema release on July 14, 2023.
