Highlight new in the home cinema: the ultimate cult film from the 90s is now even better than ever – and an absolute must for any movie fan!

The year 2022 is coming to an end – and after more than two decades, all those films of the 90s that have burned themselves into the collective memory to this day can be described without hesitation as cult films: “Jurassic Park”, “Terminator 2 “, “Scream” “Matrix” “Fight Club” and whatever they’re called. However, when it comes to picking just one as the ultimate classic of the decade, many film fans and critics have no doubts: that can only be “pulp fiction”!

Quentin Tarantino’s episodic crime thriller about a series of outlaws whose paths memorably cross went from being a Cannes winner to a much-cited pop culture phenomenon – and is still regarded as one of the very, very few films the cinephile community “must see”. ” state. And if so, then of course in the best possible version. And that is precisely why there is now a new reference: Because Pulp Fiction premiered on December 8, 2022 on 4K Blu-ray.

It’s probably one of the most highly anticipated Ultra HD premieres of all, which distributor Universal Pictures is solemnly designing: because the ultimate ’90s classic is being released not just as a standard standard edition, but as a limited edition in a steel book – which, as expected, sells like hot cakes. In any case, the limited 4K premiere should quickly become a sought-after collector’s item, because there have already been delivery bottlenecks at both Amazon and Media Markt.

And we can promise all potential buyers one thing: You can expect a 4K version that does the overclassical justice.

“Pulp Fiction” in 4K: The Blu-ray has had its day

Anyone who has the intro of the film in mind knows that right at the beginning we are briefly explained what ‘pulp fiction’ stands for or what ‘pulp’ (keyword: ‘scrap’) actually means. That sounds dirty, imperfect and also a little flawed. So you can ask yourself whether the film should not also live up to these properties in terms of quality – and whether a complex optimized version in 4K resolution is necessary at all. But this question is superfluous once the disc is in the player.

4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray seem like night and day in a direct comparison. There are films like “Pulp Fiction” that are not shot digitally, but on film – and therefore have the necessary source material to make another significant leap in quality in Ultra HD. The sometimes enormous increase in sharpness is especially noticeable in the countless close-ups that Tarantino (also in “Pulp Fiction”) likes to use. Whether it’s the fibers of the suits worn by Vincent Vega (John Travolta) and Jules Winnfield (Samuel L. Jackson) or the faces of the two legendary assassins – this is where details come to light that have never been seen before.

At the same time, a new color correction ensures a more vivid image without distorting the original look of the film. Bright shots appear more balanced, blacks are richer, and overall the picture is not only more dynamic, but more natural than ever – even warm-toned, overly stylized sequences like the meeting of Butch (Bruce Willis) and Marcellus Wallace (Ving Ramming).

We put the old Blu-ray back in for comparison and came to the conclusion that after more than ten years it has now had its day. The leap in sound quality is not that big, but that was to be expected: the old disc left nothing to be desired.

With its UHD premiere, “Pulp Fiction” not only looks better than ever on your TV or screen, but it brings new life to your shelves – literally. Because after all the different Blu-ray editions that have hit the market over the years, the most legendary dance scene in film history with Vincent Vega and Mia Wallace (Uma Thurman) graces the limited 4K edition. Don’t like the motif? Then you can simply place the Steelbook upside down on the shelf (see below)…

Conclusion: The steel book of “Pulp Fiction” is a must for all fans of Quentin Tarantino. The Limited Edition cuts a very good figure on the shelf, but is of course worthwhile for all 4K viewers who want to experience the cult classic in the best possible quality. We certainly can’t wait for the next Tarantino classics to come out in Ultra HD…
